Need guidance on Classic II repair

Arg. That's a ridiculous price, especially for what it is...  Try searching for "Universal Color TV Alignment Tool" or something similar.  Maybe there's a different product that will accomplish the same thing.  I read somewhere that someone carved a bamboo kabob skewer for the task too.

Yes. In my case pins 7 and 8 were at 12.06v. I think I’m in good shape.

I think you need a minimum of 4.85. I’ll bet you could get there by adjusting PP1. Do you have a tool that can safely reach it?

You up should definitely measure the voltages on pin 6 of the floppy port. The acceptable voltage ranges are listed earlier in this post/thread.  I bet your voltages are low.  Have you replaced DP3, DP4, CP4, CP5, TDA4605 and CNY17G-3?  PP1 is a bit tricky to reach. I bought this kit...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

Huzzah!  I may have figured it out.  Funny thing is, I didn't change a thing.  Here's my theory.  Initially, I only replace the capacitors on the motherboard and the analog board.  After doing this, I my Mac still wouldn't chime.  In trying to troubleshoot, I started messing with the PP1 voltage...

I am not an expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt...  :)   I don't know what the codes mean, but I don't think they matter much.  I think so long as you're hitting the key specs (470uf, 25v, size), you'll be ok.  You might want to consider the capacitors with a longer life.  (e.g. 7000...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

Hi Everyone, Thanks to all of you that have helped me along the way.  My Mac Classic II is still down.  In searching the forum for answers, I came across this post.  I am going to try some of the testing and replacing components as described in the post.  Do I hit a point where it's better to...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

I had to reread the manual to my multi-meter to make sure I was reading AC when checking pin 6 on the TDA4605.  I confirmed that I was reading AC, but this time, the measurement was a little lower at 8.23V. I have replaced DP3 & DP4.

Thanks for reminding me I can access the pins from both sides.  I feed a little stupid for not figuring that out.  :) I am measuring 8.5V on pin 6.  Just to confirm I am doing this right...  I touched my red lead on my multi-meter to pin 6, and the black lead to pin 4. What does this...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

Sorry for the noob question.  How would I do this safely?  To perform this test, does the analog board need to be installed in the mac? (connected to the CRT, motherboard, etc.?)  Or can I supply power to the analog board when it's NOT installed in the mac to perform this test?

Need guidance on Classic II repair

ARG!!!  So everything was working.  I had just installed a fresh copy of System 7.0.1, and I was having fun installing some of my favorite games...  Last night, I needed to step away while I put my kids to bed.  I left the machine running.  When I came back about 30 minutes later, the screen had...

    Macintosh Classic capacitor types

If you're in the US, you should look to buy from mouser.com or digikey.com. You can get exactly what you need. I used mouser. The individual capacitors are very inexpensive. I recommend reading through this forum and buying all of the recommended caps, diodes, etc for both the motherboard and...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

Got it working!  I replaced CP4, CP5, TDA4605 and CNY17G-3.   It booted right up!  I bought The hard drive is really noisy, so I might look into replacing that next.  Also retrobright. I plan on writing up a summary of my experiences, solutions, and recommendations when it's all done!  Work is...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

I did not.  Maybe I was being unsafe.  I let the machine sit for a few days before disconnecting the CRT.  I also toggled the power a few times with it unplugged.  I'm not an expert, and it's possible I'm unknowingly taking risks...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

I have played with the voltage adjustment at PP1.  The max I am able to get is 4.27. I will try re-flowing the power connector tomorrow. I've read through the links provided by dochilli, and it looks like CP4 and CP5 are potentially trouble spots, along with TDA4605, CNY17G, & IRFBC40.  It...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

Is this something that I should replace? My voltages on pins 6, 7, and 8 appear to be low. Pin 5 = -12.02 Pin 6 = 4.23 Pin 7 = 11.46 Pin 8 = 11.46 "Control the solder points of the power cord connector."  What do you mean by "control"?  Does this mean replace/reflow?  Sorry for the noob...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

So I've recapped the motherboard and analog board.  My Classic II is still as dead as when I got it.  I think I'm at the end of my technical know-how in solving this. When I first got this computer from eBay, I turned it on just to see what would happen.  At first, it was completely dead.  I...

Need guidance on Classic II repair

So I finished my recap of the motherboard.  I didn't have any fine wire, so I wrapped around the MB.  It looks terrible.  I've ordered a better soldering iron and some 0.02mm wire from Amazon.  I'll see if I can get it cleaned up.  When I tried things out, my Classic II still...

Thank you!  Are the vias conductive? That was my first thought as well. I tried them with my multimeter probes and got no response. I assumed they had some sort of coating on them...
