Clamshell iBooks are crazy little things. Zany design, terrible performance, fun to own. My first was purchased in 2003 for $350 which was a 366MHz indigo. Thing cost me a fortune as a few months later the logicboard died and it needed RAM and a battery. As I recall, the who fiasco ended up...
Now might be a good time for thinning out my herd. I've got several compact Macs that will probably have to find new homes soon anyways, so I wonder if this trend will increase over time or fall back off once the Steve Jobs news wears off.
Unfortunately the iMac G4 never really got fast enough before being upgraded to the G5. By that I mean if the G4 chip in the iMac had lasted long enough to reach 1.5 or 1.67GHz like the PowerBooks, then it would probably still be somewhat useful today. There is a HUGE difference in performance...
Nice work! I was using my Newton in college for notes until just last year when I graduated. Always had somebody ask what the heck it was. You're right, it makes boring classes more fun.
There is a much better software selection for Newton OS 2.1 which includes POP email clients. If nothing else, the better handwriting recognition is worth it. Also, having owned a MP 100 and MP 2100 I can say there is no comparison in usefulness. There is NO reason not to get a 2000 or 2100...
If its an OS 9 system its gotta have Classilla, Office 2001, AppleWorks 6, Stuffit Expander 7.0.3, Acrobat 5.0.5, iTunes 2, QuickTime 6.0.3, and probably Graphic Converter as well.
Never had any problems with Leopard on my G5 systems. It has brought to light problems with some other flaky systems though. I can't run Leopard on my 867MHz TiBook at all, but Tiger runs just fine.
Thats an excellent question. I know what you mean about speed too. My 867MHz TiBook is MUCH faster than the 867MHz 12" Powerbook I had even though the 12" had faster RAM and newer components all around. That L3 cache made a HUGE increase in performance.
Same here. As much as I do love my G5, Lion coming out next month means that Leopard is going to start seeing less support, and every day more and more Apps are becoming Intel only. Seriously not cool as the G5 is still a really powerful computer and people are still out there using Pentium 4...
Keep in mind that no Newton is "small." They're pretty big, but still make great devices. I used mine a bunch the past couple years just because. If I could find a way to export spreadsheets from QuickFigure Works to Excel I'd use it even more. Like others have said, MP2000 or MP2100 are...
They must be more expensive up north. Cubes are all over US eBay for under $100. A nicer one can be $150, but it sounds like you got the display too which is at least $50 in value right there.
Thats pretty wild. I guess they still have to make sure they're turning a profit, but they could at least get an 80GB drive in there for over $200. Still a less risky way to get an iBook without going through eBay I guess.
