First time in a while that a compact Mac has booted without incident. I did, however, give it an isopropyl bath before even attempting to power on. Don't worry - I'm changing the caps ASAP. :) What are the power supplies like in the SE/30? As bad as Aztecs in the LC's? Does the analogue board...
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to dig out the multimeter and figure out where to begin. U7 sounds like a good shout. I think I'll remove U8 as well just so I can remove any gunk from underneath it - U7 had quite a bit. It's annoying that I can't immediately see any rotten bias - that would...
Brand new tested battery has been in the mobo from the outset (first thing I did). I also gave the whole board a clean using 99% isopropyl alcohol. The most I get out of the thing is a small hiss from the screen indicating that power is definitely flowing through the machine, but boot up of any...
The answer may be obvious, but I received a non-working Mac Color Classic. I replaced the battery, turned the computer on, hit the power key on the keyboard. Nothing. Cleaned and recapped the motherboard. Nothing. It's the analogue board, perhaps? Will a recap do, or are there perhaps deeper...
I remember the shock and disappointment my mom had when we opened the family's new Blueberry iMac (333MHz). In Apple's advertising at the time, the blueberry looked darker and less Turquoise than it looked like in real life. Little did I know that within a year or so, the Indigo model would be...
Got myself an SE/30 - just waiting for it to arrive. Likely going to need some TLC, but the SE/30 is one I've been after for a while - just been distracted by other models.
Also picked up a G4 Mac Mini to act as a Mac OS 10.4 file server capable of talking to the vintage Macs. Felt like the G4...
Isn't it something to do with the fact that the CPU is involved to a greater extent with USB 2.0 whereas FW400 isn't as CPU-intensive? That and the more advanced up and down stream of the FW400 tech. Anyway, yeah - a FW400 external hard drive was always more reliably quick for me. DVD burners as...
P.S. I'm not looking forward to the inevitable analogue board recap...
On the bright side, I'll know the initial extent of the problems (hopefully) with a simple PRAM battery replacement. But those caps...
I may regret this if it IS completely dead; I'm hoping a re-cap is all it needs. Crossing my fingers that it's not an exploded battery. £62 including shipping:

Many thanks for all of the responses! Okay, so it seems it must have been something with that particular installation of 7.5.5. I installed 7.6 over it and made sure to install the whole boatload of 'features' 7.6 forces down your throat. As a result, all of the GUI elements are back to normal...
After doing a fresh install of System 7.5.5 on my Quadra 700, I've noticed that despite its support of 256 colours on multiple resolutions, certain GUI elements, like the folder icons and the Apple Menu icon are still in simple black & white. Any thoughts as to why and what to do about it...
