Invalid key length = what exactly?

Yeah, I figured as much. Thanks for the confirmation. Interesting enough, when I pulled the drive (I edited my post with the specs) it was only slightly warm. I'm not sure the HD gets terribly hot in these things. The drive bracket is under the CRT, and the heat rises. I bought this iMac from...

Invalid key length = what exactly?

The other day I was playing around on my G3 iMac (see sig), and the Finder suddenly goes crazy; repeatedly saying that it needs my attention. It then flashes an error about not having a valid system folder. Unable to do anything, I hard reset, and sure enough it can't find a system to mount. I...

    DVD Playback on G3 iMac?

Just out of curiosity, did the slot load iMacs that came with DVD drives have special decoder hardware? Or was the decoding hardware integrated into the Rage 128 graphics chipset? I am wondering if it's possible to play DVD movies if I salvage a sloat load and install it in my CD equipped...

    iMac "iMac600" SE...

I'm impressed. Especially on how nice the external case looks. I actually salvaged all the Indigo Blue parts from my old 350Mhz, and I'm thinking about polishing them up a bit. Somebody suggested 400 grit sandpaper and metal polish, but I'm still researching that. Disassembling this thing was...

How the hell do you replace the speakers in a G3 iMac?

Also, I'd just like to say whoever thought it was a brilliant idea to put so much plastic in the *internal* chasis out to be drug out into the street and shot. This stuff gets VERY brittle with all the heat it's exposed to (no fan in the slot loads....thanks Steve). Half the plastic in the front...

How the hell do you replace the speakers in a G3 iMac?

Okay, I'm stumped on this one. I've torn apart my 350Mhz Idigo because I plan on robbing it for parts in case my 500, or another machine I'm hoping to get, goes down (hopefully not). The case is completely disassmbled. However, I'm having a bitch of a time figuring how the speakers are attached...

    iMac "iMac600" SE...

I hope this doesn't seem like thread hijacking. It's kinda related... What are the risks of disassmbling an iMac down to the CRT? I'm always heard that CRTs are oh-so-dangerous because of the huge residual voltage that can hold. - John

    Finds at Goodwill...

Finds at the Goodwill across the street from where I work: Apple Extended USB (white) for $5, in excellent condition. Apple Pro Mouse (white) for $4, in excellent condition. USB Zip 250 Drive (looks barely used) for $4. Everything works perfectly. On another day I went, there was an Indigo...

    700 MHz iMac G3s

Neat trick. Plus, you can actually regain IR via a USB device. I've heard of a couple that work with the iMac if you want to turn it into a set top media player. Incidently, Apple didn't completely discontinue ADB until about 2004 (not 1999). Certain Macbooks used it as an internal bus between...

Drive options: SCSI or USB 1.1?

Firewire is not a dead end in Mac land. I am confused where you're coming from on this one. Competent Firewire enclosures can be had for not much more money than USB 2.0. FW is faster than USB 2.0, and it has a more intelligently designed bus. Plus, you can find peripherals that use both, thus...

Jaz Drive + discs = worth keeping for backups?

I think it depends a great deal on the quality of the tape drive, the tapes used, and how often you intend to back up. CD-Rs are not idiot proof. It's been my experience that they are not quite as resiliant as professionally pressed CD-ROMs. If they get scratched, you stand a better chance of...

Firewall and File Server - How low can you go?

Good point Bunsen, But on the other hand, aren't you limited to something like 16 volumes? So realistically, that means the largest disk size that you can take advantage of is 64 GB (4 * 16 = 64). That's not terribly bad, but it is somewhat ungainly. But then again, that's why this is a retro...

Firewall and File Server - How low can you go?

That's what I was afraid of. I had heard that 7.5.2 added support for volumes up to 2TB, but at the same time, I noted that the caveat was that it only applies to machines that came with 7.5.2, or have PCI slots. That rules out any of the Quadras as being good choices for file servers. - John

Firewall and File Server - How low can you go?

Yeah, I thought about just getting a Linksys router, and I still might, but the idea of using a Mac as a File server still appeals to me. Sure, Wintel might be even less of a PITA, but that's not the point. Since your Win2K machine is on 24/7, I assume that if you added the Firewall features...

Jaz Drive + discs = worth keeping for backups?

I apologize for the thread necromancy, but yes, I have found Jaz to be highly reliable. Mind you, the last time I used it was several years ago. It was an external SCSI setup on a PC I used to own. I had it for serveal year, and it never crapped out on me once and saw hours of constant use...

Firewall and File Server - How low can you go?

Evening Gents, This my first post. The retro Mac bug has bit me. I own two iMacs that I perchased from forum member Mike Richardson, and I love them dearly. I don't know where else to put this, so I figure I'll try posting it in the RetroChallenge forum, since it's kinda a Retro Challenge I'd...
