Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Well, I'm getting unpredictable reboots w/o a working PRAM battery. The one I put together doesn't quite fit correctly, but, it does prove that my systems are more stable after the PRAM is working correctly.
My Powerbook 5300 DC plug is encased in JB Weld after repairing the solder points. I put 3 coats of the regular stuff and not the "Qwik". I wait 5 min in between coats.
I also used a small amount to fix the bottom case where a crack was developing.
I've been hunting high and low for NiMH batts that could be rebuilt. I was just about to order a set of cells for my old-leaky unit...
And by chance I ran a search on old part numbers and substitues.
And I see that there are some FedCo units in Apple housing out there!!!
Best price is from...
Hmm... so I transplanted my drive the from 5300cs into the 5300ce and it works fine. Maybe because there are no pram batteries and no OS on the drives its having issues.
I'll report back after I rebuid the drive from scratch using the 5300cs.
So I got my trusty mSATA to IDE adapter installed and it took some acrobatics to get the Disk Tools from OS 8.1 to get recognized by my Powerbook.
Here is the setup
I put the floppy in the drive
I power up, get to the grey screen, mouse moves and trackpad works
But, it never seeks the...
NOTE: Permatex makes a similar conductive glue that is used for rear window defogger repair. I might try that as well. Its a bit thicker, but, it has more conductive material in it than "wire glue".
going to run to Michaels and see if I can score some thin sheet brass for my PRAM battery build.
I'm all good, but, I noticed my 5300ce has a very corroded power unit now that I am working on it. I got a donor 190 off of fleabay last month and now I am scavanging it to get my 5300ce in tip top shape.
One of the battery connectors is nearly toast... I might try and remove the springboard...
Does the 5300 actually have a PRAM battery??? I don't see one in there. and I don't see where the connector would be on the system board.
The service manual only talks about the 190.
Am I missing something???
I have one cracked/broken "foot" on a 5300ce that needs some love.
I found a spare on fleabay and before I start tearing apart my precious 5300ce, I'd like to understand the steps.
Thoughts?
Yup, thats what I had to do.
Install my hacked PRAM battery (which does not currently fit into the brown "blanket" of the bottom case) and let it charge for an hour.
Boot into a fresh 9.1 image and then run the firmware upgrade utility (twice!)
Then I reset the pram, crossed my fingers, and...
Is it possible to use a CF<->PCMCIA adapter to install MacOS 8.1 onto a 5300? I know the 5300 can boot from PCMCIA (CF card) but can it do the same for OS 8.1?
I'm trying to do a "clean" install of both OS's onto my 5300cs and 5300ce now that I have the mSATA<->IDE adapters...
SUCCESS!!! I upgraded my 500MHz G3 Pismo board to a G4 (7410 freescale) that I got off of fleabay for $15.
Proof is in the PNG, as we now say...
The toughest part was getting the Bootrom to upgrade to 4.1.8f5 and "stick". I had to sneak in a nearly dead PRAM battery and get it updated...
Based on another suggestion, it was recommended to use sheet brass from a hobby shop to come up with the 3v plate, as it won't corrode as fast as copper.
For those wondering what "wire glue" is, see the following link: (yes, I have used it in the past to fix small connections)...
Found the firmware updater out on macupdate.... had to do some hunting. (Apple tech article ended up in the waste bin of the internet and is lost for good)
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/5658/apple-powerbook-firmware#
Still getting an odd bit of feedback in system profiler.
I don't see alot of articles on this.
My main pismo has a v3 boot rom
My secondary/test has a v4.1.8f5 boot room and it sees the G4 board just fine.
Any help is appreciated.
I think I can mod a cmos battery for a dell, since the connectors look the same.
[NOTE: Dell and other PeeCee devices use CR2032 coin cells (non-rechargeable) while the fruit company standardized on VL2330. I have a pair of VL2330 laying around.]
I'm going to use a thin piece of copper with a...
