Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
They *should* be fine. Q3 seems to be actually the same component (BU406), while the replacement you found for CR1 is an upgrade of the original component, with response time of 150 ns instead of the original 200 ns and similar current/voltage specs.
If you want to go with a component which is...
Just be careful while cleaning the floppy drive, it's easy to bend the heads and make the whole thing a nice but useless doorstop. Killed a couple this way!
Ok guys, I've got a great news to share with you: my portable now boots! :)
Well, sort of. It's still got problems, but we've managed to get something out of it.
Ferrix has managed to get his hands on another portable that exhibits a problem quite similar to mine, so he thought he could...
Here's an update: I've actually found the culprit! (I think)
There was a chip in the battery area named T548 whose function I don't know. This chip had developed a short, probably because of the leaking acid that corroded the protective layer of the case and exposed the copper underneath.
I...
I decided to take a few resistance measures between the pads of the capacitors in the battery area of the logic board.
Among the top 6 capacitors, the two on the left and the two on the top show values ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand kOhms, increasing over time as they charge up -...
Had time to look at this boy more closely today.
I've washed the board completely over again, and now it's really shiny clean - unfortunately no luck with the problem.
So I've decided to do a few measures - I don't know anything about how this thing works or what are the best places to look...
Blown chips are a common sign that usually the drive was connected "backwards", which happens relatively frequently with the 20 pin header. I've blown mine once and I almost thought I had killed the whole machine, but actually these chips are very common and you can replace them all for less...
Joad, it looks an awful lot like this problem here (it's case one). I'd start by replacing the 74LS139 latch chip at location F2 and perhaps the one at E2, too. According to this, the 6502B processor could also be bad, or it could be a ROM problem, but I'd just start by checking 74LS139 -...
It may be possible to revive it - I've seen worse looking boards. There seems to be a few damaged traces right where the battery used to be, but I think an expert hand could probably run a few wires and bypass them.
I think you can also try using a splitter like this: http://www.ebay.it/itm/131129463007?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Any update on the BIOS dump? Have you had any success?
It'd be interesting to compare it with the "plain" Intel version and see where the main differences are.
IIRC, BMOW actually had built something similar, at least at some level, called the Plus Too.
I'm not really sure about what could be "recycled" (if anything), but if the purpose is to build a Mac on FPGA I think it could be a starting point.
Just to make things clear, mraroid: nobody here's against you! Sometimes it just so happens that one misinterprets the rules, or simply forget/don't know there's a rule regarding a particular subject, and accidentally violates it. It's ok, nobody's here to punish you!
Just remember, for the...
I think part of the "problem" with Macintosh Garden is that it's got a very broad definition of abandonware.
Technically speaking, if a certain software isn't sold anymore and its maker is not anymore interested in making money out of it, it may be considered abandonware: however, it's...
Thanks tech!
I'm not really sure about the SWIM chip, though, so I'm asking you a couple more questions: when you're talking about crowbar activation, what do you mean exactly?
What we're seeing here is this: when we turn on the portable and the video cable is disconnected, we almost always...
Tried to edit, but timed out - actually connecting the red cable just makes the mac die instantly with no particular sign. The sad mac is happening more in a casual way - most of the times the yellow cable brings to a nice and reassuring chime, but sometimes (just sometimes, there doesn't seem...
