blackholemac answered on Macintosh Garden: MRKS could stand for Markus Fest.

    Why Toast names Apple_partition_map 'MRKS'?

I observe: in a compact disc published in 1997, its Apple Partition Map is named MRKS. Partition map (with 512 byte blocks) on 'mike_mulligan.cdr' #: type name length base 1: Apple_partition_map MRKS 2 @ 1 2: Apple_HFS TOAST 2.5...

Can I boot a Powerbook g4 from external USB drive?

2015-10-27 Success! After at least eight hours of reading and experimenting, I managed to boot OpenBSD installer from USB Stick. (I am slow.) My Mac: PowerBook6,2 , G4 12-Inch DVI 1GHz , M9007 , A1010 , EMC 1986 . Thank you very much, Sherry Haibara, for making me aware of possibility and...

Can I boot a Powerbook g4 from external USB drive?

Another reference (thanks Sherry Haibara for sharing with me) to deliberately boot USB MSC is 'Booting your iBook G4 from a USB stick' by Ben Collins. How to tell if your PowerPC-based Mac "officially" supports booting from USB storage: enter Open Firmware shell (hold command + option + o + f)...

    TiBook Fan Noise normal?

In my observation of (Titanium PowerBook G4 DVI 800 MHz, 2002 "Ivory" PowerBook3,4 A1001), both fans are controlled independently, each in one of three states: off (0 V) low (3 or 3,3 V) high (5 V) Do you have a voltmeter or multimeter? Remove bottom panel, turn it on, hang TiBook off...

12in AlBook fan is as loud as a MDD

No, not a TiBook. I have September 2003 12-inch "1GHz Mini-DVI USB 2.0"; M9007LL/A; PowerBook6,2; EMC# 1986; A1010. I will add: the temperature and speed (tachometer) sensors seem do work correctly (temperature rises with load, falls with idle, reported fan speed changes while I intentionally...

    imac input methods

I do not have first-hand experience with Mac OS 8. IIRC, I read that Mac OS 8.6 better supports USB storage than does OS 8.5. I had no trouble at all using USB storage (block storage magnetic disc of 512-octet sectors, Stick flashdisc, or optical/CD) with Mac OS 9. What CD-ROM drive is in your...

    Change mouse pointer OS 9

I found some other pointer enhancers, while I was searching for System 6 Sticky Keys. Some are in Pure Mac; some are not: Change Arrow 1.2, Color Arrow, CursorFixer 1.0, Fat Cursors 1.2.1 Apple Macintosh Software Toolkit | trace.wisc.edu (The Trace Research & Development Center is a part of...

    Breakthrough!

Yes, as you already found in Low End Mac. A few USB devices were sold supporting Mac OS 9, of the extended wi/WaveLAN/PRISM family.

    Solar Powered Mac/PC Laptop?

CCFL consumes more energy than HDD. (forget 7200 r.p.m.) IEEE 1394 is a "Hot Interconnect", power guzzler. You should physically remove its PHY and power supply circuitry, if intending to use solar. OLPC XO uses LED backlight. Modular, so that smashed panel can be replaced, without wasting...

    ibooks are so much fun...

It has been done. 12.1-inch diagonal, SXGA+. First Toshiba used it in their tablets, later Fujitsu, Motion, Lenono. I read at least two reports over the years, of people customising their PowerBook G4 12-inch, installing this screen. Also ThinkPadders like such a screen, have put it in X31 and...

    1400 BookCover :)

Template PostScript file was part of preload Apple Extras, found on PowerBook 1400 HDD. I did not have space to keep my 1400 :( . I kept its template file with intention of redistributing it. Here it is, at last.

    50 G4 Minis (not mine)

Cory5412, TheWhiteFalcon: I am not calling a TiBook faster, but better for my usage. TiBook base plus AC adapter (compatible with today's Apple AC cables), versus Mini plus peripherals plus larger power brick. Ability to tinker with ease: tool-free access to memory, and obvious access to...

    50 G4 Minis (not mine)

Well, graphics program rendering is not "as native" as OS 9. Some games do not work in Classic Mode hypervisor/virtualiser, but do run well in OS 9. Mac Mini G4 is a iBook less battery and panel. I would rather have Titanium PowerBook base (any model after first launch model), than g4mini.

12in AlBook fan is as loud as a MDD

My 1GHz has loud, full-blast, max rpm, high-speed, constantly spinning fan. After reading of jholt5638's success by removing modem, I just finished trying it. I guess the mainboard is damaged, because removed modem and reset-all did not result in changed fan behaviour. But I did confirm...

    Nobody likes the G3 all-in-one

I really wanted the one which my school was disowning a few years ago. But they would not let me have it, even though it was worthless. It was "government property" and must go through approved disposal avenue, whatever partnered tech liquidator company. It angers me so much, "the man" and "the...
