LocalTalk and StyleWriter II Printer Sharing

Okay, a bit of an update... I spent some time with the classic in pieces (re-capping and replacing the hard drive with a SCSI2SD), but have tried this evening to get the shared printing working... Well, having connected the printer to the Centris via the modem port, and the Classic and the...

    Setting up ethernet and Internet....

Yes, that is another advantage of being connected, as it will enable me to transfer files much more easily to a modern Mac. The next step is to see if I can use a LocalTalk connection to link my Mac Classic to the Centris and thus onto the wider world!

    Setting up ethernet and Internet....

Thanks for the suggestions, both of you, but I have now solved it, and have my Centris 650 online, browsing (albeit very slowly) using iCab! I've had to go back and re-install System 7.5.3 from scratch, as my previous attempts to install Open Transport did strange things to my system folder...

    Setting up ethernet and Internet....

The latest thing for my Centris 650 is to connect it to the Internet and set up Eudora 3.0 for my personal email account and using iCab/WannaBe/Netscape Communicator 4.0 for a bit of a chuckle. The Ethernet port the Centris is connected to is one of two on a TP-Link Powerline system connected...

    SCSI2SD..... Tearing my hair out!

No problem, I hope it helps! Here is the link to my idiots guide, now located in the peripherals section: https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/27215-fitting-a-scsi2sd-in-a-68k-mac/

LocalTalk and StyleWriter II Printer Sharing

Dear Scott, Thanks for the really helpful and detailed instructions in your post.... Just to check, you have suggested I connect the StyleWriter II to the MODEM port on the Centris, and then make a LocalTalk connection between the Centris and Classic via their PRINTER ports? I think I can see...

LocalTalk and StyleWriter II Printer Sharing

Wow, thanks for the detailed responses, many thanks! Sorry about the ADB error, I know the cables were not the same, but I was tired last night and couldn't remember that the printer cables are serial ones! I think I've got some of the bits required (I did a bit of speculative eBaying last...

LocalTalk and StyleWriter II Printer Sharing

I think I already know the answer to this, but I thought I would ask anyway... I have two 68k Macs (a Centris 650 running 7.5.5 and a Classic running 7.1), both of which I use for writing and database stuff at home. I also have a StyleWriter II printer which works really well and is completely...

    Upgrading/Refurbishing a Classic

Yes, good point; the ROM works just fine, and is a very useful backup to have: it makes setting up the SCSI2SD even more straightforwards. I'm still trying to decide what to put in there, whether to have it as an original system 6, or to take it up to 7.0.1. I don't think that going much beyond...

    Upgrading/Refurbishing a Classic

Thanks, I should have noted that 'clean everything' meant doing this with the floppy drive, as well as just cleaning the PCBs!

    Analog Board Caps

While I am on the topic, I just wanted to query whether it is appropriate to replace the Power Supply capacitors like for like... I know that C1 (CP1 on my board?) is often suggested to be changed for something else, but before I start ordering all the assorted caps, I thought I should check...

    Upgrading/Refurbishing a Classic

Hello All, Having finally maxed out my Centris 650 (just awaiting the delivery of my final bank of 64Mb of RAM to top it out at a full 136Mb), I'm now turning my attention to my lovely little Mac Classic that was recently given to me by a friend who has had it since new. It is completely...

Creating CD-Roms in OSX that can be read by a 68k Mac

****SECOND FACEPALM MOMENT THIS WEEK**** Okay, I'm clearly suffering from some sort of stupidity disease... Having tried and failed to burn a Mac OS Standard disk image earlier this evening using Disk Utility, which set me off around the wonderful world of Google, I have tried again and it has...

Creating CD-Roms in OSX that can be read by a 68k Mac

Now I have my Centris 650 up and running in a totally gorgeous way, I've now hit a new problem that I didn't anticipate. I've spent an hour or so going round in circles courtesy of Google without much joy, hence I am posting again! The short question is "Is it possible to burn CD-R's using OSX...

    SCSI2SD..... Tearing my hair out!

I'm really pleased, as this was the Mac I wrote my PhD thesis with back in the 1990s, and I have spent a lot of time hunched over it in my past! Everything else has come together really well after getting the SSD sorted: I've checked, cleaned and checked the original floppy and CD drive...

    Fitting a SCSI2SD in a 68k Mac

Good point, that's why I was using my eMac.... I think that HFS (MacOS standard) is only supported up to Leopard 10.5.8. You can only save disk images to floppy up to this point. Thanks for the reminder!

    Fitting a SCSI2SD in a 68k Mac

Okay, as promised, here is my idiots guide to installing a SCSI2SD to replace a defective HDD. This has been tried and tested in my Centris 650, but should be broadly applicable to any 68k Mac. Thanks to gadget, rezwits and olePigeon for helping me to get it right over the weekend! Actually...

    SCSI2SD..... Tearing my hair out!

***** Facepalm moment ***** I have just solved the problem, and it was so much easier than I was trying to make it. All I have done is copied my Install System 7.5.3 disk images on to the SD card, powered up the Centris using the DiskTools floppy to start the system up, and I'm currently doing...

    SCSI2SD..... Tearing my hair out!

Okay, a quick update: some progress, but still not quite there... I have initialized and resized/partitioned my SD card (Mac SSD, SCSI drive 0), and it is recognized properly by the Centris. EXCELLENT! What does not seem to be working (yet) is the copying of the contents of my 7.5.3 image from...
