If you can, try hooking it (the drive) up to something else via IDE (rather than USB) just to confirm that it's OK. If it is then maybe try a different IDE cable in the 638 and try again

It's currently running 10.4 quite nicely but I haven't really played with it much so how much of a struggle it is in its original spec is a bit of an unknown Upgrading isn't likely as I can no doubt use the cash to buy another Mac curio
