Hard drive went belly up yesterday (damaged sectors, refused to 'verify' under Win98's installer - yawn) but as it's good old IDE, there's a stack of them on my shelf so replacement part not a problem. I'll probably also up the memory a bit but what I do with it after that...hmmm
Any ideas anyone?
Picked up a 14" Apple monitor yesterday but got a bit of a surprise when the woman I was picking up from asked whether 'that beige box' is any use to me?
'That beige box' is an IBM 300GL desktop PC. I said yes and she explained that 'someone' had told her that the motherboard was broken. Well...
Had a dead 840 at the start of the week (similar symptoms - got a green light but no chime and no boot) and it was suggested that leaving the power connected for about 20-30 minutes might do the job. I ended up cleaning the motherboard (rather than the 20-30 minute power option) and that seemed...
If you want to just re-install OS 9 then re-partitioning isn't necessary. It might not even be necessary if you wanted to install OS X and OS 9 but, as was pointed out earlier, it's 'advised'. If you're in any doubt as to whether you're going to install OS X at a later date then it might be wise...
Following on from last weekend's Freecycle haul it's been a bumper time for liberations in this corner of Mac-dom. Not only did a 9500 turn up yesterday but a 7300 arrived at 9:00pm and I have a 14" Apple monitor on the way (Saturday) courtesy of Freecycle
The 9500 looks to be in great shape...
It lives!!!!!
Plugged it all back together last night, hit the power switch and it bonged into life and went through the boot cycle. Of course that would have been too perfect a story though and there was, naturally, a problem. That problem being that my Apple monitor died quite a while ago and...
Thanks for the tips - I'll no doubt give them a try. The motherboard had a good wash to get rid of the crud and it's been drying. Now just got to find a spare hour to get it all plugged back together and see if there's life in that there varmint ;)
The Apus is 200MHz 603e with 1.8Gb hard drive, CD-ROM and 64Mb RAM
The 840 has three HDs (1Gb, 80Mb and 'other'). No idea of RAM, VRAM etc. but it has had a CD-ROM drive added (badly). Looks like the stock CPU (i.e. no upgrades) - I just wish I could boot the git so that I could say for certain :(
After months of absolutely nothing appearing on my local Freecycle group, someone advertised a Quadra 840av. I duly stuck my hand up and said 'yes please' and I got lucky. :D
Went over on Saturday to pick it up and the woman says 'Oh and is this any use?' pointing at a Umax Apus 3000. Any...
In the last year? I can't remember the last year?
Highlights I suppose were:
G4 Cube
Purple iMac DV
Beige G3 Tower (for free)
New 2.8Ghz dual core PC
There were also a few beige PowerMacs but nothing really outstanding. Like Bolle says though, still a couple of weeks left and I do have a...
Just to echo what everyone else has said, flipping a drive over is not going to cause any problems due to magnetic fields. On the other hand, a trip to a Comp USA store in Washington (business trip a couple of years back) resulted in the Apple sales guy showing me that if you flip a CRT display...
Just to echo what everyone else has said, the SE/30 will definitely accept 16Mb SIMMs. I know as I managed to get some (here in the UK) and added them to my machine to ramp it up to a very healthy 80Mb. Takes a while to boot but worth it. One thing to note though is that the SE/30 has two banks...
That's how I got mine. Bid £150 for my dead machine but got outbid at the last minute. The guy who won then turned round to the seller and said that he thought he was bidding in dollars instead of pounds (?!?!?!) so second chance offer to me. Drove down to London to collect it and the guy...
I've had some success using the 400Kb floppy images that I (think) came from the Sunder site with my Lisa 2. It was a while ago now that I needed to re-install Lisa OS but I was able to use a Mac (Quadra 700 I think) and Disk Copy. I seem to remember that as long as I was using low density disks...
