Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
OS 8 hasn't been released by Apple as a 'freebie' (as far as I know) but the 8.1 upgrade has.
Stick with OS 7 - your machine will feel quick speedy...and it's free (apart from the very, very, very final releases) ;)
You need to get the Macintosh/Utilities/Network_Access_Disk_7.5.sea.bin disk image (from the Apple site). This'll create you a startup disk which you can start you machine up with. I can't remember what does/doesn't come on those disks in terms of disk tools so give that a try first and see.
To...
You need to get yourself to the Apple download site and download a startup floppy image (anything system 7 should be fine). This should allow you to get into your Quadra and check what state it's in.
If the worst comes to worst and you can't find any install media or can't repair the machine...
Very nice job
Does the Portable 'see it' OK? Are there any formatting issues? (my pit of a brain is telling me that there's something 'quirky' about the Portable and certain versions of the Apple disk tools)
Given some last minute bidding craftiness (and a load of people not understanding eBay bidding properly) I landed a QuickTake 100 last night for a measly £5.51.
Of course the real shame is that even my mobile phone has a much higher pixel count than this little beauty...then again, that's what...
It's been too long since I dragged a Duo off the shelf and had a look (and I always have mine hooked up to a microdock so there was always one available). Alas, stuck in an office, I had to rely on my obviously shaky memory :I
Apologies for giving out misleading info. :(
Scarily the Mac was originally intended to be a sub $500 machine. Given what Apple were asking of it in 1984 (both in terms of technology and mark up) it's hardly any wonder that its price shot up five fold. Thing is though, even at a quarter of the price of the Lisa, it was still stupid money...
I'd never even heard of them so I'd have to agree with you ;)
BTW If you have AppleTalk and Chooser installed then you should be able to hook up via the printer/modem socket. Just plug the other end into another Mac, setup an AppleTalk connection and you're away
Without the appropriate controls panels then you are kind of stuck.
I've only ever used the micro-docks and can't say that I've come across one that has ethernet (definitely seen them with HDI-20 (floppy) and maybe with HDI-30 (SCSI) and might even have a spare HDI-20 one if I remember...
This is one of the big problems with the Duo line as a whole (and not just the 2300). While it doesn't have much in the way of ports it does have an ADB socket and a serial socket (the telephone/printer). If you're not willing to get a docking station (the Duo Dock is big but maybe post a want...
The 2300 is a very nice machine - all small and compact like the rest of the Duo line but powerful enough to run at a decent speed. The lack of a SCSI port is a pain (but, as you said, a mini-dock gets around it)(heck, even a built-in floppy port would have been something) but at least it has...
Just to add some extra info into the mix, it wasn't Steve Jobs who originally wanted the Mac to be a sealed unit. Jef Raskin (original Mac project head before being ousted by the black-turtle-necked one) originally called for a self-contained box which users wouldn't be able to open up, expand...
Just landed a PowerMac 7500 from eBay for the astronomical sum of £5. 100Mhz, 144Mb RAM, twin HDs (500Mb and 6Gb), keyboard and mouse, original OS CD and a Formac ProMedia graphics card. Now if that isn't a bargain, I don't know what is.
Not only is it another one for the collection but it now...
Interesting. The PRAM/reset trick definitely seems to have stopped working so it might be time to investigate replacing the fuses.
Out of interest, just how difficult a job was it? My soldering skills are, ahem, useless so I'd be really interested to know whether it's ultra-fiddly work or...
It was actually advertised here on the forum by a very nice chap in Germany. I certainly wouldn't have got it for the price I paid if it had been on eBay ;)
I've landed a PowerBook 2400!
It arrived yesterday and it is absolutely pristine. Packaged in its original box (itself in pristine condition), complete with floppy drive (in original packaging), all original leads (some still wire-tied), manuals, registration card and sales leaflets/brochures...
