My reasoning from my very limited understanding of the video system is that only the last pixel is incorrect, all other 7 are ok therefore the problem must be between RAM and shift register, assuming the RAM's are ok. If it were an addressing issued before the RAM's, it would be at least two...
Looks like I've now got a healty (but pretty fragile) SE30 on my desk (not bad for a pensioner). Serial ports checked out OK, did Zmodem transfers, dial-up stuff and it seems OK. Printing on LocalTalk OK as well so I'm a happy camper now. Max speeds of 57600baud on the serial port with ZTerm...
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have SCSI! Meaning I managed to get SCSI going on the SE30. It was the two faulty vias between the SCSI chip and the glue chip.
I tried everthing I could think of to test the system (both internal and external drive, formating, disk copy between two drives, bad block...
I had a similar problem with my SE30 (vertical bars) and luckily I managed to fix it. First thing I did was look at exactly what was going on on the the screen. It's a bit hard to see on the image posted above, but it looks like 7 good pixels and one bad (incorrect) pixel. Does that sound right...
Hi,
I'm in the process of trying to fix the SCSI on my SE30 as well, and found the original circuit diagrams incredibly useful (but that hasn't lead to any success yet :( ).
Don't know if you have them already but I found them here...
Ok here are pictures of work done so far.
The two wires are bridging tracks that were corroded away. Ones is going to the Sony sound chip and the other one to the Bournes filter (so nothing to do with my graphics problem).
One wire to fix the graphics problem. Ran out of wirewrap at that...
The only ones I can get readily here in Ireland are Verbatim, and they are brutal as we say, i.e. from my experience they are of poor quality. I have bought a few boxes in the last while and each contained, on average, two faulty / dodgy ones. Could also be the way they were stored in the shop...
Finally found out what psu is in it. It's a Autec UPS40-2002. It's universal voltage (90-260V) alright, so happy days.
80meg drive in it now and working fine (except for address selector wheel which I connected wrong so all addresses are inverted now ;) )
Also power connector pin out is...
Will post some pictures tomorrow, was busy fixing up my external HDD until now...works fine now and will try with the SE30 tomorrow hopefully.
Also haven't had the chance to have a look at the other SE30 thread yet, not enough hours in the day :)
For running connection wires I also use wire...
Thanks for checking.
Good idea, I have one from and old external HD case so that would be grand.
Would be nice to have a cleaner solution with the original PSU though.
Some progress updates but more problems now.... :(
I managed to fix the video problem :) :) :) . Seems I was right about my initial diagnosis, I traced it back to a faulty via. Tried reflowing it but no good so I had to run a wire. Man that board is staring to look like a plate of...
Ha! That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid! Don't want to turn that nice little psu into even more junk that I have to bring to the electronic recycling place. Mind you I pick up more stuff from there then I bring... :)
That's exactly what I was thinking! Moving the connector may switch it between 110/220V.
Maybe waynestewart , you could have a look at the position of that plug (I assume you are on 110V).
Otherwise I might have to use an old PC psu.
PS: no labels anywhere, not even on the botton, but I...
Thanks for the replies guys :) .
Have tried the logic board in the SE and have checked the voltages (all fine HD spins up OK) but no joy.
Great idea with the external HD, will try that as soon as I find out if I can use mine with 220V (see this thread...
Hi there,
Among the pile of stuff that I managed to get a few weeks ago is an external SCSI harddrive case, as shown below:
I'd like to find out who made it etc as there is no labelling on it at all.
But more importantly I need to know whether the power supply is a universal voltage one...
Hi,
as I can literally see the tumbleweed blowing across this thread, I thought may as well post the first reply.
Just a quick update on my problem: I have now managed to boot the SE30 (see pic) off the floppydrive (good!) but I had to disconnect the harddrive (bad). Could the SCSI chip be...
Hi there,
I'm new to the forum and Macs in general. I always wanted one around the late 80's but could never afford one, so when I was bitten by the retro bug last xmas I started looking for one. That's when I realised that buying old Macs is like getting the bus: you wait for ages and then 3...
