Most modern PC motherboards have a dual bios just in case one gets corrupted. Check mobo type and you should find info on the net. Also some mobos have a jumper to clear the CMOS (reset BIOS) if it has a password lock.
It's definitely NOT done :)
If UG7 gets hot, there's definitely a problem there somewhere. I guess you took out UG7 and checked all the pins for any shorts already. I'd even check if any of the pins are somehow connected to each other when they shouldn't be and that none of the pins are shorted to power or ground.
I'd...
Yeah I'd agree with techknight, your upper 4 bits of the Vid signal are out. So your issue is centred around UC6 as Vid(4) to Vid(7) are stuck on low (screen black). It's possible that those four lines happen to be bad but somehow I reckon that it may be on the input side of the chip.
I would...
I've seen a few mods on the net and they all used additional power supplies which I think is the sensible thing to do. I guess it also depends on the power consumption of the hard drive but I wouldn't stress the PSU with any additional devices (especially if you're running an external floppy)...
I would give it a clean with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) first and see what it looks like after that.
Also I'm wondering if the videocard and your monitor are compatible. If they aren't it could explain the lack of video. Happened to me once.
Does it boot off a floppy? I find it easier to tell if...
Unforunately not, Bunsen. The cut-out was made to fit the Liliput 619GL 7" widescreen LCD. I think what you see is the homemade bezel as the Liliput has a strange, non rectangular shape. Foresight didn't come in to it :)
Thanks for the replies bear. The adapter I made up is a passive one where red/green/blue and grounds were soldered on to appropriate connectors, well no shielding whatsoever, not even the shells were connected. Neither vsync nor hsync were connected and green wasn't wired to either sync pin...
Yeah I really like that 1/3 scale hack too. Pity the screen is so low res, just check out the pix full size. Doesn't really look great but nice hack all the same.
I finally finished recapping a IIcx which hadn't been used in years (PSU blew up as well on first start-up :O ) and it seems successful.
The problem I now have though is the graphics card. It's a Radius GS/C-M that apparently, after doing some reading, only outputs 1152x882 and is sync'ing on...
This was painted using ordinary acrylic spray paint. Plastic primer first, then the inside was sprayed matt black. The outside then received 5-6 coats of a satin finish beige colour. Paint was what I spend most (all) money on :(
That's a real shame! :( Hopefully you'll be able to use some bits as spares.
Btw I believe the date printed on the batteries is the manufacturing date, not the expiry date. As far as I know expiry dates on batteries were only introduced recently.
I'm in the middle of recapping my IIcx and have run into a bit of a problem: are those two 10uF caps not polarised? There's no polarity sign on the silkscreen and the white square (where the cap goes) doesn't have any chamfered edges which usually indicates the positive terminal.
After checking...
Interesting story Mcdermd, and you're right. Mine looks more like a Volvo!
It is indeed a shame that 4:3 LCDs are so rare. Most old software doesn't support widescreen resolutions which usually results in poor quality when the image is scaled to the LCD'S native resolution.
Or what to do when you really, really want a Compact...
When I got into vintage Macs I quickly realised that I really wanted a Compact Mac. For me the Plus is the ultimate in retro: looks nearly like a 128 but has SCSI and can have enough RAM to run pretty much anything vintage.
So I went...
I'm totally with you on this one James1095, I was just referring to Uniserver's original post where he was having problems with SMT tantalums and exposed tracks. I don't think SMT's are the most ideal choice for these situations, that's why I suggested through-hole types.
I guess it's as much...
Thanks James1095, yeah was running it without the X2 for a while for testing purposes. I guess it did fail safely; it didn't catch fire and could have gone either open (no filtering) or short circuit (blown fuse) if I hadn't pulled the cord within two seconds.
Btw value of the cap is 0.47uF...
Ha too late now :) But seriously, the IIcx psu only blew up two days ago, otherwise I would have asked you. I got the other two fixed, so not too bad.
I'm just hoping that Plus is not crossing the big pond on a 787, more electrical problems than even the oldest Mac :p
