Hi Ike,
did you ever fix this or manage to explain why this is happening?
I have a very similar issue where the machine will only work when I ground a certain pin (PA0 on VIA1 in this case) and I cannot figure out why. Very strange!
Has anyone ever actually got the diagnostics mode to work on a SE/30?
I have been trying to get a response from a couple of SE/30 boards (both working and non-working) but no luck. I tried both the onboard serial ports and also the transmit/receive signals on the diags header on the logic...
No luck with the MiniScribe. Stepper motor is clicking like mad on startup (probably moving heads to track zero?). I assume that's not normal, but don't know for a stepper motor drive. Drive is also throwing SCSI phase errors when trying to access it. Have been playing around with some disk...
Just a quick update on this.
I think I got it working again. Voltages are stable from turn on and machine boots straight away. Need to check temperatures and compare them to my other Classic but so far, so good.
All I did was resolder the QP2 MosFet and replaced a dodgy looking 1uF cap (which...
Thanks for the tip. Any idea how to go about that? Is there a tool for that? Sure enough all format utils I tried didn't work. Using Norton undelete discovered some files alright but couldn't access them.
I got this Classic of a friend's friend that's in really poor condition technically and cosmetically. Sure enough it showed the usual garbled screen. I recapped the logic board which is now working OK (tested in another Classic). But still the garbled screen. So a voltage check showed that they...
Nothing really interesting but still too much!
In no particular order:
- need to recap a number of LC's
- in process of trying to get a Classic with analog board problems going (new post to follow :) )
- trying to find out what's wrong with Uniserver's SE/30 boards...slipping down the...
I have been picking up bits and pieces, mainly off Ebay, over the last while and the odd machine locally but usually just units without any extras.
So last week I finally managed to come across a nice conquest in the form of a boxed Mac SE (800k drive) with a good bit of stuff, and all at a...
So you didn't have to mess with connectors on the analog / logic board?
Ok I think I get it now...so the internal 9" is still driven by conventional logic board / analog board combo as normal (display #2) and the Radius vid card drives external LCD (display #1).
If that's true than I guess...
Nice work Uni! :)
Just trying to make sure I understand this correctly:
The Radius card is driving the internal CRT and is set for 512x342 resolution and a refresh rate that works with the internal display. The card produces vsync, hsync etc signals which are passed into the analog board...
I usually take out the bottom screws and unscrew the top screws about 3/4 of the way and then push down on one of them with the long handle Torx while holding the handle. Once the top pops out, remove the screws completely and slide off the case :)
Chances are at least the ground plane was running around the board. Might still work though, fingers crossed! If there are ground problems though you might be in for all kinds of weird behaviour...and none of us like that kind of stuff ;)
I'd say that board needs a good scrubbing before you can properly assess the damage. I suppose the corrosion on any metal parts like the SIMM socket is going to be a big problem.
Those boards seem to be quite happy in their spiritual home :) ...they're still not doing anything useful...
Hmm interesting! Are you sure the continuity between pin 2 SWIM and pin4 UH7 is good (i.e. as close to 0 Ohms as possible)?
I suppose the scope adds a bit of capacitance to the circuit, so might act as a filter or maybe create a bit of a delay. Is the signal on the scope clean or is there lots...
I got this Classic off a friend last week and have been spending the last few days trying to get it going. Definitely the worst condition Mac that I ever got, both technically and cosmetically. Both logic and analogue board problems, but that's for another thread :)
Well when I took off the...
Tried googleing this myself when I saw the one that's on the Bay...couldn't find anything on CS LC-16 but seems a E-Machines graphics card, not the Xillinx FPGA adapter the seller claims.
Hey Ike,
just a few random thoughts I had when looking at Uniserver's problem:
I guess you checked everything around the SWIM that has to do with writes: write (WR), write request (WRREQ), FPH3 (write strobe). I'd also just make sure that there are no shorts between any pins on the swim.
But...
Even if C1 is good, the charring on the connector could cause this as it doesn't make proper contact. I guess the high frequency signal could cause the buzzing noise. Replacing the wiring harness would probably be a good idea. I have the same problem with a Plus even with a new C1 cap.
