The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

So, next step was getting the floppydrive back to life. As to be expected, all the grease from the metal moving parts was completely gummed up, even the grease on the plastic gears from the eject motor was totally hardened out. Took apart what needed to be taken apart to get to the moving parts...

Whats the problem with this Lisa widget drive?

Oh, noise wise I prefer the Miniscribe over the Widget  Just with that noise alone you can visualize the movement of the head!

    Berenod's conquests and collection

Don't you tell me! The rollers disintegrated into small orange bits, and some of the pieces fell onto the floor while handling the unit, without me noticing until I stepped in them. Bloody sticky gluey stuff it is 😤 Luckily it's a tiled floor, but still took me a bunch of IPA to clean the floor...

Whats the problem with this Lisa widget drive?

Eventhough mine is working, I too am looking around for a replacement, as sooner or later the widget will eventually fail. In below post, and the one right after you'll see some reccomondations I got over here for a replacement...

Whats the problem with this Lisa widget drive?

Complete spin-up of my widget, till the brake releases at the end with the typical click sound.

Whats the problem with this Lisa widget drive?

Oooh, that does not sound very good. Almost like a mechanical issue, like shot bearings! My (working) widget is out of my Lisa, so could quickly do a video like yours, and on mine the rotation is totally silent. If on yours the alignment of the axle gets out of whack due to worn out bearing...

    Berenod's conquests and collection

So, now I gotta find one of those spiral cords for the keyboard (after I properly clean and disinfect it), and see if that one is good... Also need to find me some DC2000 QIC mini-cartridges and see if the tape back-up can be brought to life... Also rummage tthrough my memory simm's, should...

    Berenod's conquests and collection

After opening them up for a quick inspection, looking for out of whack stuff, everything looked surprisingly clean (compared to the outside of the machines) so decided to have a go with them. The first one doesn't do anything at all, no noise, beep, totally zilch. Bummer... Next one, looks more...

    Berenod's conquests and collection

just picked up 2 Mac Plus machines, with some accesories: Mac Plus 1 Mac Plus 2 Micronet SC20 external hard diks Apple Tape Back Up 40SC (M2640) Filthy as sh*t keyboard. Gambled a bit, there were no cables at all, so totally untested, paid 200€ for the lot (Plusses are normally easily repaird...

Macintosh Plus found on side of road

Welcome to the world of discovery into vintage Macintosh computing! It can be a bit daunting at first with their incompatible with anyting else floppies, making you find alternative ways of moving stuff from the modern world to your vintage machine. I find the external DB25 SCSI SD card...

Macintosh Plus found on side of road

I would refrase that to "they usually don't kill themselves", unlike many other compact macs :ROFLMAO:

    Two SEs & Accessories - $300

An SE should indeed run 6.08! Or 7.01 at the most, anything higher will make it rather sluggish, especially when running of the original harddrive!

    Two SEs & Accessories - $300

In my opinion: Get the batteries out asap. The Varta's have a lower chance of leaking/exploding compared to the Maxel's, but best not to take the risk. Machine runs fine without battery, it's mainly the clock which loses the setting, and if I'm not mistaken you also lose the settings in the...

The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

Next one to attack is the floppy drive, see if we can get that one cleaned and greased up. Then I'm at the point of a very tourough cleaning reassembly, getting the display squared out a bit better, replave the lightbulb in the softpower switch, bunch of smaller things really. Next step after...

Slowly, but steady.. Project "keyboard" completed!

The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

True that, bet no engineer ever said "let's make sure that they'll still be working perfectly in 40 odd years time" :ROFLMAO:

The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

I'll let you know when mine is restored! But truth be told, there are several keyboard technologies or production runs which turned out not so good regarding longevity. I'm also restoring a TRS80-model III, uses a keyboard with the rubber domes, and also is a disaster with about a third of the...

The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

Might be just early technology, the keyboard brands using those foam pads (BTC, keytronic) moved over to the rubber dome type keyboard. The mechanical ones likey were a fair bit more expensive!

The slow process of coaxing my Lisa (2/10) back to life

Not just Apple! Keyboards with those foam pads were used by several brands, Compaq Portable, IBM PCjr, some Wang machines and many more.

Macintosh Plus corrosion : can I work it out ?

I hope foto 3 (the component side of the logic board) was before the IPA cleaning? I usually flush with demineralized water, cause the IPA always leaves those blotchy white traces. Just be very carefull everything is properly dry before powering up, unlike IPA water just doesn't evaporate that...
