Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Ah, I see. 1988 is still old for consumer grade electrolytic capacitors. ;) And while the voltages and stability may seem fine, the ripple levels of the voltage rails may not be that optimal because of aged caps.

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

I know, but this machine is from 1987 (there was even personal files on the disk from 1987). Electrolytic caps dry up and the rubber seal disintegrates over time, it's still a good idea to recap it even if it's not of the dreaded '88-'94 SMD capacitor type. These kind of consumer grade...

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Update: The PSU measures 7.7v on the 12v rail, so I think that's possibly why the HDD "stopped" working. EDIT: My bad, I didn't make good enough contact with the pins while measuring. It's 12.7v. 5v is spot on, though. I'll get the whole system (motherboard, analog board and PSU) recapped at...

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

It may be an old board, yeah. Anyway, about the FPU. The 25MHz jumper position is supposed to use the same 25MHz clock as the CPU, so that no extra oscillator is needed. I don't have any 25MHz oscillator to tests with. I saw images of this board with a 25MHz FPU with no FPU crystal.

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Thanks. One thing I noticed btw, is that if I installed an FPU (and set the FPU jumper to 25MHz), the machine would freeze when loading the Mobius 030 extension on boot. I tried two different FPUs, and one that I know for sure is 100% genuine.

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

If only I had the side buttons on my Macintosh SE. The plastic part that clips on is missing! I had version 4.99 of the Mobious 030 control panel, but now the 40MB SCSI HDD is completely dead, so I couldn't preserve it in time...

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

It's a Mobius 030, according to the control panel software at least. How much is this accelerator worth? I don't think I want to keep it, as I want the Mac SE to be compatible with all the good old software and games out there.

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Yup! I even have one that I will install. Also, that one oscillator on the board was bent out of its socket, will fix that. I opened up the machine first to inspect it before turning it on. Will desolder that battery and install one of those classic PRAM battery holders, and install a new...

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Oh, it was "just" a 68030 25MHz accelerator.

2-chip/3-chip 1MB RAM sticks in a Macintosh SE?

Some sources (even Apple themselves) say that you can't use 1MB 2-chip RAM SIMMs in a Macintosh SE, while other sources (random forum posts) may suggest that it does work. Have anyone confirmed if 2-chip/3-chip 1MB RAM SIMMs work (or don't work) in a Macintosh SE...

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

Yeah I was thinking some simple video output as well, but was wondering if anyone recognize this by the position of the connector, the white color of the connector, and so on.

Mystical Macintosh SE connector on the back

I'm getting a Macintosh SE soon, and it has this connector on the back that I haven't seen before. Does anyone recognize this kind of Macintosh SE add-on? It could be anything of course, even a custom hack. I can't seem to find anything like this on google.

Bootable image with patched HD SC Setup 7.3.5?

I'm in the need of a bootable floppy disk image that has the patched Apple HD SC Setup 7.3.5 application on it. Does anyone have one, or can make one for me? It doesn't matter what OS stub is on there, but system 7.x probably does fine. It must be bootable on an SE/30. :)

    Strange Classic II CRT Problem

Check for corroded pins on any removable IC (and the RAM too). The leaky SMD cap phenomena can corrode pins even at a long distance from the actual leaking cap! And yeah, replace those surface mounted electrolytic caps while you two are at it. :b&w: I wouldn't care too much about the...

    SE screen flicker.

I doubt it's related to the vertical deflection IC, just try what I say instead. Common problems with the vertical/horizontal deflection IC includes cut-off parts of the image.

    SE screen flicker.

I'd try to slap the machine first to see if it's a bad solder joint problem. If not, look for any dried solder joints by eye and resolder it if you find any. If everything is well, do a recap of the analog board. The caps on the SE motherboard are probably just fine, I'd be more worried about...

SE/30 screen distortion when HDD/floppy activity

Do you think a problem with the bourns filter could cause interference all over to the display signal in the motherboard connector?? Sounds very unlikely to me, but oh well...

SE/30 screen distortion when HDD/floppy activity

I use the stock harddrive from an SE (40MB Quantum, also recapped).

SE/30 screen distortion when HDD/floppy activity

I cleaned the connectors, especially the SCSI and floppy connector, they were dirty. Now they're super shiny. However, the problem still occurs the exact same way. But I want to rephrase the problem, it's actually happening under heavy read/write from either the HDD or the floppy drive, so I...

    Macintosh Classic

While booting from ROM is handy if the OS won't boot, it's pretty much just a fancy feature. There's not much to in that booted state, what's the point? It's much cooler to have a personalized full system booting from the HDD.
