Awesome AP - thanks. The Plus has only X on it - no X2, same as the 128K Prototype - all X on the bigger ones, and only Y on the smaller ones. I will find these once I get some time - right now getting units that work out of my collection ready and for sale.
Trash, I would have to check. Since the one unit is working, I really don't want to run the chance of screwing up any good components on it. Actually strongly thinking of putting it on the market (there is a whole different thread I am sure). Don't want to run the chance of 2 bad units...
Interesting, AwkwardPotato... I wonder this though, because last night in testing an odd thing happened to my Mac Plus. Ran the Plus a couple of times ok. Then, the Power was off, AC cord in, and an external SCSI HD 80SC was connected and running. Then I heard a loud sizzling, and then a...
Hi everyone - this is an off shoot from my previous post entitled "Different Macintosh in Original User Guide?" because it now tries to tackle the issue of getting the second of my two Original Macintosh prototypes working. Here is the issue:
Unit powers on, beeps ok, but the video comes up...
Hi everyone - I am going to continue this thread in a new one entitled "Help revive an Original Macintosh Prototype". Reason is, I wish to try and repair the sister machine that I mention here with the video issue.
Cool Trash - great insight. Certainly some unique fish mash of design in these babies. I think I am going to keep one of them, especially if I can get the one with video issues working. Might be a stretch though.
Sorry Unity, I didn't;t take a shot of the other bits of the Sony drive. If I have it open again, I will, or certainly the other unit. I need to open it and try to tackle its functionality, despite the CRT being different than the working unit. Stay tuned.
Hi everyone - Great News! One of my two 128K Prototypes LIVES! I pulled the floppy out and gave it a lube up. Works like a charm. Found an old disk kicking around with "System Software 400K" written on it. Turns out to be System 1.1, Finder 1.1g. Anyhow, the unit is alive and well. If all...
MOS8-030 - thanks for the link to the cleaning. Very useful and will put it into practice this weekend. I found an old floppy that someone had handwritten on it "System Disk 400K". So, will see if I can bring life into the working one.
Unity - thanks for the feedback and the input...
What is the best way to recondition the drives? I fired on up last night - the one with weird video issue unfortunately, and I could hear the read/write heads adjust themselves back into the ready position. However, insert disk and it is weird - it pushes in, and clicks down almost manually...
SO Gorgonops, I wonder how we can tell the EPROMS? I can't boot from the floppy. I have a few external floppies around but no system disks to try. Would like to know the ROM version too.....
OK - The torx arrived and - JACKPOT! Both units have Mr. Macintosh inside on the video board, on the EPROM board, and on the Main Logic. Here are the pix of both units. Interestingly, the unit with the video issue has a different manufacturer of tube. Bot units have non functioning floppies...
I agree Trash - after I read and replied I looked up on the web. The front of mine looks the same a photos of released 128K's. Actually, my vents look the same too. The guts will tell the story I think. Slight difference that I see in venting is where the serial number would typically be...
