I had one of those at work back in '95/'96. Loved it... worked great... until it didn't, which didn't take too long. Be extra careful of the "flaps" on either side of the paper tray that raise & lower during feeding. They can jam really easily. Can't imagine that old plastic will hold up too...
Yeah "not supported" is kind of meaningless these days... heck, "not compatible" doesn't even mean what it used to, either. :) My daily driver is a 2006 Mac Pro running Mavericks, when it's only supposed to run Lion. It's had the CPUs upgraded, 16gb RAM, and a GeForce 750 1.25gb video card...
A little late to reply, but to answer your question - YES, absolutely. Especially an 8-core Nehalem. Nearly every new nVidia card will work out-of-the box with your Mac Pro as long as it's running Lion or later. It will run El Capitan with no extra coaxing. You can max the RAM out at 128gb, but...
It's the fastest non-PowerPC Mac ever made. They were built specifically for audio/video work with a quick co-processor.
Unfortunately they weren't built very well, so they are relatively rare these days. Between brittle plastics and a motherboard that is extra-susceptible to leaking...
Yeah, I never put my OS 9 machines to sleep back in the day. Just loaded up After Dark (before it got too buggy w/ later OSes) and set a timer. On Power Macs, I set up Energy Saver to just shut the screen off after a while, but tried to use After Dark as much as possible because I was running CRTs.
One of the coolest things I've noticed about vintage Mac collecting is the way different people collect.
Some people collect all one style of Mac.
Some people collect all one model of Mac.
Some people collect as many Macs as they can fit into their <insert storage space here>...
Re: Velociraptors -- I still have 2 of them; a 150gb and a 300gb. I used the 150gb in my Mac Pro for years as the boot drive, before SSDs really started to become affordable. The performance boost vs. 7200rpm drives is VERY noticeable. I never had a problem with noise with either of mine.
I...
Not really a conquest, but more of an upgrade...
I use a Late-2012 Mac mini as my home theater server running Plex. I have a 1TB external USB 3.0 drive connected to store TV & movies. The mini came with a 500gb 5400rpm drive that's always felt more sluggish than it should. Plus, between the...
Yep, suffice to say I've learned my lesson... going to thoroughly wash all the boards I have left until I can get them all recapped!
Just to be clear -- I'm absolutely not saying any of this was caused by Charles's recap job -- exactly the opposite! I was going through financial troubles over...
After having uniserver recap my Q840 board, I'm having the exact same problems as epoxy2600.
No internal or external SCSI drive will mount at startup - and I've already confirmed the drives are good on the Q950. All I get after the RAM test is the blinking ?. The computer also booted...
Searching for "SCNB-1.0" actually turned up some results -- apparently it's a Photoshop accelerator card (hence the DSP chips). Supermac also slapped their logo on this card and sold it for a while.
It probably won't work with OS 7.6 or later, so I'll have to reserve it for one of my older...
Well, it took a while, but I was able to grab up a parts machine. Luckily, this one also turned out to be a 200MHz!
Swapped the logic board, mouse button, and one of the rear feet to replace the broken one on mine, and it's right as rain!
