I need a new PRAM battery for my 867MHz Ti Powerbook (model A1025).
I just wanted the battery, which is a fairly easy swap on the PRAM unit with a bit of soldering, so I ordered on from here: http://www.smallbattery.company.org.uk/sbc_lir3032-vdy2.htm. It's a 3.6V rechargeable LIR-3032...
There's only one that needs moving, PLL #1, and yep, she checks out OK with a multimeter on continuity mode, and the resistance across the solder blob is the same as the other pins (near enough to 0-ohms).
Going in isn't too much of a hassle, since it just involves flipping the bottom cover...
As a further update, I've just gone through and made all of the PLL switches match exactly those of my 1GHz powerbook. Still no 1GHz for me :(
Oh well, it's still working very nicely at 867MHz (confirmed on an OSX 10.4.11 install disc system profiler).
Sorry, my last post on the other thread should have indicated that I placed the solder bridge across the "0" position of PLL #1 to zero it, in order to achieve the 1000MHz configuration (ref: http://www.macxtrem.com/articles.php?article=71)
I tried to fiddle with the PLL switches as per the link above, but it still seems to be running at 867Mhz.
I've tried checking with Powerlogix's CPU Director (2.3b4 under OS 9.2.2), but it crashes (something about PPC memory mapping).
"sysctl hw.cpufrequency" in a terminal reports 867000.
As...
Yep - definitely a bad sound chip / circuit / jack on the 1Ghz board. I swapped in into the known good body of the 1Ghz, and... no sound at all.
i then put the working 867MHz board into the 1GHz body - and sounds works properly.
I now have a perfectly functioning 867Mhz Ti powerbook, 1GB RAM...
Thanks for the replies, guys.
Unfortunately I should have posted this in the Powerbook forum - not sure if it can be moved there (Moderators ?)
I'd like to just be able to swap the chip if possible, since my "donor" powerbook's sound doesn't work - only one speaker works).
I'm happy to strip...
I took a punt on a used Ti Powerbook, model A1025. It looks and runs great - even the battery and PRAM appear to be functioning OK.
Only minor quibble, it's an 867Mhz model. I have a 1Ghz powerbook Ti A1025 that I can scavange for parts.
So - how easy / difficult would it be to swap the CPU...
For all you lovers of vintage mac and mac emulation (I'm picking most of you reading this fall into one or other of these categories), John Leake of retromaccast has built a working 1:3 scale model of compact mac running System 6, using a raspberry Pi and mini vMac under linux.
Check it out...
Yeah - it had 16MB without any cards in the user slot - although there was one card in the other 'apple' slot, which I believe is 8MB, but there are no larger modules made which fit this slot. In other words, the built-in 16MB of RAM consists of 8MB soldered on the board and 8MB in the Apple...
Thought I'd give an update on the above.
Thanks to another board member I obtained a further 16MB of memory (=32MB total) and so managed to install OS 8.6 and 9.04 on separate partitions. The orinoco 7.2 drivers meant the Dell 1150 card was correctly detected and was able to connect to my...
The real reason your board was so dodgy was lack of tantalum use ;)
Just joshing - it's good for morale. Great job on reviving a very sad board!!
You can't see / use more than 8MB of RAM under system 6, since mode32 is needed, and system 6 can't run on 32-bit clean ROMs.
Just a final update to this / close the loop.
Put in a known good set of A1025 speakers, still no sound. Presuming it's a logic board problem, related to the headphone jack. Can't be bothered fiddling with it further, so I've got another A1025 powerbook coming which is missing a hard drive -...
How about slapping 10.4 on the drive in question? While this won't definitively answer the question, it'd be interesting. That said, you should have enough mac to run Leopard without the symptoms you're describing.
Great stuff & congrats from someone with a similar experience to yourself.
Did you replace the large radial caps? I did mine, but one of them had a ground (-ve) lead that I just could not desolder from the board, so ended out soldering the new cap lead onto the old one's pin.
Next stop...
Might not be a bad drive - Leopard (10.5.x) is significantly more resource intensive than Tiger (10.4). Many more GUI elements and other embellishments in play.
You're wanting a gig of RAM for Leopard.
There's no firmware update for the M8892/A1025 (the 1GHz Ti Powerbook).
Pulled the logic board - cables all seemed intact and attached. Put it all back together again - still only mono sound - and now only coming through the headphone jack. I've read that this can be a sticking jack, as only...
I recently obtained a 1Ghz PPC Powerbook Titanium (Model: M8859) as per this thread (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=20660&p=200276#p200276).
It works great, except only the right speaker works, and sometimes even that one cuts out. I presume it's a loose connection somewhere. Any suggestions as to...
Just an update to this:
All up and running with a dual boot setup of 9.2.2 on a 9GB partition and OSX Leopard 10.5.8 on a 60GB partition. Both OS's run really nicely - Leopard is not too sluggish and, with OS 9 as its own beast, I don't miss the Classic option of 10.4.11. That 'option key' boot...
