Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Lombard/Pismo- yes, though it seems to demand a bit of a premium on ebay, so I suspect they are not as common.
Wallstreet/PDQ- I don't think so. Never seen one at least.
I've done the 250 "upgrade" to a Pismo module. 15 minutes tops, most of it removing really small screws. Ironically, the...
Funny, I would have bet that the connector on the back of the Zip drive was the same as the one on a CD/DVD.
BTW, instead of figuring out the Dell connector, try the one for the Pismo/Lombard Zip. Same connector on the Zip end and you probably already have the pinout for the PB end.
Same here, except it was a second generation iPod (one of the real old ones). I sheared off the IDE connector while putting the thing back together. :-(
I'd be shocked if it didn't work out. I used one just like it to upgrade my Pismo's Zip module to a 250. At the time, I was lucky; we were still at the old site and they tended to turn up in cabinets and drawers like so many bad pennies.
You should be able to use the mech from any laptop Zip module as I'm pretty sure they all use the same Iomega-made mech(s). Personally, I wouldn't go for the D-series module, in your case, as you should be able to find a C (Inspiron 4000/8000) one (like this) cheaper.
If you do get the D-series...
They definately made a SCSI external 250. I had one until recently when I traded it to a comrade. (CC?)
The USB ones came in two flavors, the non-USB-powered ones that could also take a FireWire adapter and the (more common, at least on eBay) USB-powered ones.
Now, if you want obscure variants...
Under OX X, Bluetoosh is pretty much a no-brainer and you can get away with most any adapter. At least, that has been my experience.
The D-Link is special, IIRC, because it was the "official" Apple adapter and could be made to work under Mac OS 9. As I understand it, you pair the kb and mouse...
Heck, there's a clean-looking 1400cs/133 with 16mb RAM on ebay now for $1 opening bid and $15 shipping. You could probably grab it with a fairly low bid, expecially if you snipe...
I suspect it's mostly engineering as it is a pretty common point-of-failure on a lot of older laptops. Heck, my wife's 2yr-old Alienware had an equivalent failure.
Theoretically, the 12x (Teac?) CD-ROM for the 1400 uses a drive with a modern connector. (The older mechs had an interface like a hard disk.) It should be possible to use a slot loader with the interface from a 12x.
Good move staying with the 250s. As I understand it, the 750s can read/write 250s, but only read 100s. PM me your address and I'll pop a 750 in the mail.
Holy Unobtainium, Batman!
LCGuy, it's not well known because it is not an Apple upgrade. That also makes it really hard to find, let alone in the box.
JT, grats. Do you need any 750 Disks? I have one pack, but would be willing to let go of a couple.
