Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
The Plus, SE, and Classic can all be configured to have up to 4 MB of RAM. As for the PRAM battery, the SE has the battery soldered to the logic board (or at least mine does) so they will need to snip it out or desolder it.
Sorry for the delayed response. I had another problem arise - the 100 MB volume on the FloppyEmu that I use with the SE was almost full, so I had to create a new 224 MB volume. After sorting one issue out (the downside to playing with these machines late at night) I ended up doing a proper 6.0.8...
So far, I'm having about 50% success. I was able to copy the fonts from the Classic into a font suitcase, which I loaded on to the SE volume. So the SE should now have the same fonts the Classic does, including versions for Helvetica and other fonts that are more suited for larger text.
What I...
I was able to use the Font/DA Mover to move some fonts over, specifically from Mini vMac to the SE volume. Helvetica looks really pixelated when increased in size (to 18 pt.) whereas it's more crisp on the Classic when increased to the same size. Perhaps different versions or something?
I...
Is there a way I can get the other system fonts on the SE? My Classic has the full set (Helvetica, Times, Athens, San Francisco, etc.) and I'd like to get those on the SE volume but wouldn't know how to do that.
I know I've responded to this thread before, but I've been using my vintage Macs for writing a lot lately, so my preference has become more definitive.
On the vintage Macs, I love using Word 4.0. When I got the Classic working, I mostly used MacWrite. But I find Word 4.0 somewhat easier to use...
The System 6.0.8 installation I use on the FloppyEmu for booting my 1988 Macintosh SE only has three of the basic fonts (Chicago, Geneva, and Monaco.) I was wondering how I what type of fonts can you install and how you install them? I know there's a "Font Mover DA" desk accessory for moving the...
Breaking the CRT in one of my machines is one of my worst nightmares... in fact, I've had bad/sad dreams about it happening. It's one thing if the CRT was old, worn-out and/or has lots of burn-in, but (fortunately) the CRT in both of my machines is in near-pristine condition. I feel these CRTs...
I noticed this when downloading MusicWorks... it debuted in 1984, making it probably one of the earlier music production programs for the Macintosh. Obviously no MIDI capability because MIDI would've been in its infancy (IIRC) at that time.
Despite no MIDI capability, I did install MusicWorks...
I have tried other MIDI files... same problem with ConcertWare. Perhaps by coincidence both MIDI files I've tried are bad? I'll look at MusicWorks... does it offer MIDI playback in software?
I've discussed this a couple other times in some other spots, but still haven't been able to find a solution. I've been wanting to see if MIDI playback or software synthesis is a possibility on a compact Mac running System 6 so I can play music (MIDI files) without the need for external MIDI...
It's not really that big of a deal. As for System 7, I've thought about it but I'm hesitant to. The Classic is still running its factory installation of 6.0.7 and I'm not really wanting to upgrade from that because I don't want to get rid of the volume. I could probably run System 7 on my SE...
Unfortunately, it didn't work - at least in Basilisk II and Mini vMac. In Basilisk, 7th Symphony gave me an error when trying to play the converted (3 second) clip. In Mini vMac, System 6 couldn't even open the weird file formats 7th Symphony is in. So I guess that's the end of the road... oh...
I've never used ResEdit, but having to go a roundabout way is probably a red flag that modern .mid files will not work with ConcertWare MIDI Player. The MIDI files play just fine under Arnold's MIDI Player, but that requires System 7 and QuickTime.
It's one of those things that I want to do...
I actually use BBEdit on my modern Mac and have thought about possibly putting BBEdit on the compact Macs, but I'm not sure. I don't think I'll be writing HTML code on them very often, leaving that up to my modern MacBook Pro. However, I'm currently working on writing content for a section of my...
The latest addition to my vintage computer collection isn't a computer itself, but rather an accessory that will make using these machines easier and more enjoyable. I finally purchased a FloppyEmu for use with both the Classic and SE. Currently I've been loading floppy disk images, but I'd like...
Definitely looks like it was too close to a heat source, especially with the slight discoloration. When I was a kid, my mom turned on a burner that had a portable electric range sitting adjacent to it. Ended up melting the little pilot lamp/LED on it.
Was nowhere as bad as the time I plugged in...
I think I'll just leave it on unless I go somewhere or go to bed, as Dog Cow pointed out. I just didn't know if there was any risks associated with leaving it on for long periods of time. It probably is better for it than switching it off/on multiple times throughout the day.
When I switch it...
Ever since I got my 1991 Macintosh Classic recapped and back up and running, I've noticed I've developed the bad habit of turning it off and back on a couple times a day. As in I'll do something with it, turn it off, and turn it on a couple hours later when I want to do something else. I've read...
I think it's pretty clear that I won't be able to network these two computers together without additional software or upgrading one of them to System 7. And, since I don't have a floppy drive, FloppyEmu/SCSI-2-SD or anything of the sort, that's not going to happen. (Not to mention the FloppyEmu...
