Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
If you go with something Ubuntu based like Ubuntu MATE (in the video above), there are usually some extra modules bundled in the Kernel so most modern Mac's work *Mostly* out of the box as far as networking and Graphics support. Debian is going to be MUCH more bare-bones, you'll have to do a lot...
You should checkout Debian or your favorite fork of Ubuntu. Then run Mac-On-Linux on top, that way you can have the modern software and hardware support that a modern GNU/Linux OS brings. Put that along with a near native performance OS X Virtual Machine side-by-side, is a recipe for success...
Used to be an infamous issue like this If i remember correctly for the 3400c.. Is the Keyboard ribbon cable at all dirty or damaged? I would get a cotton swab with some high concentrate Isopropyl alcohol and rub off the contacts. Probably want to make sure they are in correctly/fully as well.
The thing is we don't know how the configuration is laid out in 3rd party boards. There is really no way of knowing exactly.
From all the Datasheets I have, the CPUPLLCFG resistors are all rated as 10K, or in SMD case, "103". So, your best bet is to look for any resistors the have "103" on...
Yep, the direct heat ones. I've had ALL of the problems you've mentioned.
I always have to put them between two slices of wood and try to crush them so they flatten back out after ripping the chip out.
You can see the lot of them I got, and the one I use for PPC stuff. The Flux outline on the...
So some good news and bad news (I Guess)..
I don't know which ones are which, the Voltage controller is easy, as it's that LTC chip on the top side. So if you're content, you can modify the voltage no problem.
Page 17 of http://cds.linear.com/docs/en/datasheet/170989f.pdf shows the direct Pin to...
Thank you so much for posting that, the only reason I've to reball my chips is because finding them new is usually about the cost of the actual upgrade card for retail price.
I managed to find a Soldering stencil on eBay that worked pretty well, I'd say 90% accuracy. It came in a kit with about...
I've done this about a dozen times, still trying to perfect this operation though (About ~40% success rate).
What temperature/equipment do you use to clean the pads after you remove the CPU? My boards almost ALWAYS lose a pad or two after cleaning them off with my Hakko and solder wick.
Also...
Looks like you should be okay not removing that cable. The guides are usually a bit more intense than they need to be as they are usually taken from a full tear down guide.
I don't see any impediment as to why that DC Jack connector has to be remove as far as replacing the Hard Drive is concerned.
This should give you a good start, I just threw this together. Let me know if something is not making sense or any errors, I can go into depth.
While the Diagram is not the Upgrade card you have, the configuration jumpers *Should* still represent the Pattern "10101" Unless Sonnet moved them...
I know I'm a bit late to the part here, but swapping the hard drive on the G4 ibooks is probably the most difficult computer tear down there is (Not even joking). It can be done, but take not there is around ~30 screws, and more hidden plastic clips than you can count. I had planned on doing an...
I think when you have the buying power of Apple, you get some pretty deep discounts. You have to figure at least a 2.5x markup from BOM/Product Placement/R&D costs. I'd be willing to bet the whole Mainboard with all of the components probably costs around ~150-200$ per unit. The thing with...
I think you're totally on to something here. I for sure thought the new MacBook was going to be ARM based. Looks like Intel managed to pull the Core-M out of their hats just in time.
All Apple really needs (And everyone else) is a Co-Processor that is solely in charge of Static (Dynamic)...
I've come to the conclusion apple intentionally crippled the PowerPC mobile options there at the end. You have to figure the Intel/Apple negotiations had to have been at least a year or two. That would have given plenty of time for Apple to come up with a road map to incorporate x86 into their...
Sorry it's been a while since the last update, I screwed up the last motherboard and had to wait for a new one from Australia.. (Go figure).
I started screwing with the FSB, but it sucks because OS X doesn't read the current MaxBus frequency from the register. Only the stock one seems to get...
I've used the Edimax 7811un, I've mentioned it in my video in one of my posts. Works with N and WPA2. Otherwise you could open a new network with no security but disable its SSID broadcast. Then apply a MAC address filter to only allow the iBook to connect to it. That way nobody else can get...
Probably the most difficult laptop (Or any computer I can think of) to tear down. iBook G4's I simply refuse to tear down, litterally will take you an hour just to get the thing apart. Then you literally have enough variety in different screws to fill one of those weekly medicine sorters. If...
After doing the research I really wanted to go with the Coollaboratorys Liquid Ultra, Apparently it's the best there is. But I don't think I can use it here due to the incompatibility of the Aluminum. My next best choice was exactly as you suggested. I figure 2.2Ghz is going to be the point at...
Honestly like most Silicon, once the Thermal Junction Maximum is reached the chip just shuts off. Pretty much every modern CPU after the Athlon era (~2003) have a built in shut down at around 114*C. You can pretty much just take the heat sink right off under load, it will first throttle down to...
Did a quick video of the machine for you, sorry about quality/vertical video etc. Don't have any camera equipment, but it's something I plan on getting over the next month or so.
I'll be doing a stress test next so please stay tuned. But it's noticably faster in all situations no doubt...
