Picked up this 400MHz "PCI" Powermac G4. System profiler says this is a "Powermac G3" but it is in a G4 case with a G4 processor. Not sure what this thing is. Did apple just not bother to change the system Id?
Sorry about the image. Guess it's not my lucky day.
Got the caps today.
What do you mean by cut off? Just take some angle cutters and pull up? The plastic pieces don't have enough clearance to cut the caps off.
Tried finding a video, but there isn't one specifically on the recapping the lobo for an SE/30
The Mac also came with the original...
They could have just been used at Apple as normal work machines. Does the LoBo have hand written info on it? Does the machine have a serial number on the back?
Thanks. When you said more expensive, I was expecting it to be $10 a pop. I had no idea the caps are so cheap, even at $1.20.
Sidenote: Ive got two Diimo 030's. Might be willing to let one go, ill PM you!
A stock clamshell get a 143 with the 300MHZ CPU and 578MB of Ram. The G4 swap and 578MB will give you a 255. Not bad.
The multiplier is being changed I believe.
I recently got an SE/30 in a giant lot of Macs for $100 from a older gentleman. This specific SE/30 has 32MB of RAM and a 50MHZ Diimo 030 accelerator. After speaking to him, he apparently developed a couple of programs for the SE/30 and so the upgrades were justified. When I powered it up, a...
Yeah, cause I plan to run the same exact version of GB on a non upgraded 300MHZ G3 running tiger. Currently installing 9.1 so I can upgrade the firmware.
@tarable- I tried the shadow killer thing, it works decently. I also disabled all the animations. The machine now sits at 4% idle. I can live with that.
I also did get a Geekbench score 8-)
It got a 255 on GeekBench 2. A stock clamshell gets a 155 (according to everymac) on GB2.
The iBook doesn't have a speaker. I pulled it out when I tried to stuff a fan in it. I just need a whole new top case, the power button is popping out and needs to re seated every time I take the top case off. Brightness controls and everything seems to work. I noticed the iBook was pinged at...
Heatsink seems to be more effective, hasn't locked up yet. Ordered some JB Weld and will use that to permanently attach the heatsink to the aluminum logic board cover. Its a little ghetto right now :p
BAM! Time to reassemble and upgrade to 10.5.8. I chopped the end off an iMac heatsink and stuck it on. Ill try to max it out and test its cooling capabilities.
*Yes it's a lot of thermal paste, I added a bunch on before powering it with no heatsink. A proper amount will been installed during...
Done about about 20-30 times now, so I can do it in about 15min to disassemble and 20min to re-assemble. Ive worked on quite a few clamshells.
I would try to use Target Disk, but it doesn't have a firewire port. I tried by external DVD drive, but the computer doesn't give enough power through...
yes open firmware sees that it's a PowerPC G4. Ive now gotta disassemble it, clone a 10.5 install on the hard drive, re-assemble it and see if it will finally boot into 10.5.
