Ok, hold it right there... how does your disk drive connect to your Disk II controller? Via a 19-pin D-shell, or is it the 20-pin IDC connector? (In a related quesiton... does your 2.0.3 still boot on any other known-good Apple II computer?)
There's your solution... just use ADTPro to build yourself an 800k disk (ADTPro-2.0.0.po) and boot that, escape to BASIC, and then you can CAT the disks you created and see if they're totally hosed or are just missing PRODOS.SYSTEM.
.IMG isn't any kind of standard, so it's hard to tell if it would be supported or not. But my guess is it probably is. One thing isn't clear to me yet: are you specifically booting a floppy (PR#5) vs. just letting the system boot from the Zip disk - which I assume is in slot 7 - which probably...
It looks like it boots up just fine with the floppy drive; but the hard drive is kaput. It doesn't get mounted on the desktop. Nor does it ask if the hard drive should be formatted... it simply doesn't see it.
Unfortunately, KEGS (nor any other GS emulator) runs on an SE. So it remains true, KEGS cannot read from actual (Apple GCR) drives.
I don't know what a SAMDisk is. But if a Mac SE can't read it with DiskCopy 4.2 or DiskDuper - the original floppy is probably bad.
If you find a solution, you...
No. Different electrical interface, different control mechanism, different everything. Well, they both read and write spinning Mylar with bits of rust on them. I guess they have that in common. ;)
External serial 5.25 and 3.5 drives? Wat?
A ROM00 is not much more than a fast IIe with a few built-in parts. A ROM01 gives you a bunch of more software capabilities. A ROM03 gives you a quieter speaker (especially when running GSOS, which a ROM00 can not do).
Ok, great - that was my suspicion. Different Apple generations/models behaved differently in response to no disk in the drive. But Ctrl-Reset will always get you a prompt. (Except once you boot ProDOS, where ctrl-reset will send you to the program selector.)
Now you just need a serial lead...
It was a looooooooooong flight, let me tell you.
One more week to go - I plan to go down to the coast and take a drive on the Great Ocean Road this weekend. That is if they don't arrest me for driving on the wrong side of the road.
Right, there's been a lot of talk about various ways to adapt...
There was some point along the OS line where Macs with built-in floppies lost the ability to write and then read 400k MFS floppies. They kept working with 800k until the bitter end, though. I just ran into that tonight... my Quadra running OS9 wasn't able to read a 400k disk; it wanted to...
No problem. John from VintageMicros (http://www.vintagemicros.com/catalog/index.php) also sells small packs of appropriate feet - I can't find them on his site right now, but I know he has them. It'll be more expensive per foot, but you won't have to buy a whole sheet of them, either.
You're looking for a 3M Bumpon part. The main directory for such things:

As I understand it - it was because, in his view, they were inelegant, noisy, and detracted from the Apple experience. Physics be damned, it would be nice if we didn't need to dissipate heat.

That would work. You'd want to do a little bit of soldering on all the pins to be sure they didn't let go over time. But if you're in there, fixin' stuff... why not do it right and put in a socket? Besides, one failed. Likely others will follow. If you fix one - you might as well fix them all.
