Mac Plus not booting from Blue SCSI

This is BlueSCSI V1 we're talking about. It's an inconsistent and temperamental device, to put it as politely as I can. I've had 1GB and 2GB images work fine in a Classic on some SD cards but faced erratic behaviour or complete non-functionality with others. I've had SD cards that worked fine...

Mac Plus not booting from Blue SCSI

Yup, I sort of assumed that was a given... worth mentioning though! I was basing that advice on my experience with a BlueSCSI V1 in a Classic, which really hated 1GB+ disks on certain SD cards. Again, yours is useful info worth adding.

Mac Plus not booting from Blue SCSI

That may not be very helpful in this case. The BlueSCSI V1 performs very poorly on faster SCSI devices. My Quadra 650 hates the V1, as does every Power Macintosh I have ever tried it with. Honestly, the V1 is a mediocre product at best and I have had very limited success with it. If your Mac...

Sometimes a diode will simply decide that it is time for current to flow in neither direction any more. This is possibly one of the most bizarre component failures I have ever seen. The rectifier in this PSU failed and had created a dead short. It turns out that two of the diodes had split...

Macintosh SE/30 logicboard recreation (thread revival)

@cchiro I'm curious as to how you get on with this. I have three battery-bombed ROM SIMMs, all different physical versions, that don't work despite my best efforts to save them. I initially thought they were just simple two-layer boards but it turns out that at least two of them are four-layer...

    iMac 2006 speaker problem

The membranes have probably rotted out. Time to replace the whole speaker assembly, most likely. If it's not that then it's possibly some plastic that's cracked and come loose. The '06 models were fairly terrible as far as build quality is concerned.

BlueSCSI Plugged into AppleCD 300 Adpater

Do you have a bluescsi v1 or v2? If it's a v1 then it likely won't work at all. I've never been able to get a v1 to sit happily on the same bus as any other real drive, including CD-ROM drives. Also, if you're planning to use it with a Power Macintosh (or even a fast Quadra) then you will...

PowerMac G5 Quad "The New Blood Mod" - A guide to flushing, modifying and refilling the dual-pump cooling system.

You may be over-thinking this. Leaks and their resulting short-circuits are only a concern in a badly maintained or poorly assembled system. There are millions of water cooled systems out there that suffer no ill fate because they are properly looked after. Unless you're planning on doing a...

Proactive maintenance on a machine stored in an attic?

Be careful. "Silent" or low-noise fans often move less air than their noisier counterparts. The MDD is a machine that needs high airflow, which is why it's noisy in the first place. I've gone down the rabbit hole of trying to make one silent and it's a bit of a chore. When replacing the fans...

@macuserman Yes, some RAM and an ATA host card I think. Sadly the S900 is in a totally non-functional state at the moment and I still haven't gotten to the bottom of what is wrong with it.

The desk space that was occupied by the 8100 is now being taken up by the S900, which I am in the midst of having my bi-monthly fist fight with.

@Phipli You could configure them up to 2GB when they were new! That said, the only reason I think this could be the original disk is because it has "8100" written on it and it's the right age. I've no concrete plans for it; it'll just join the ranks of the various Macs that I set up and use on...

@macuserman I've always had a soft spot for this particular design and it's grown on me even more since I've owned one. It's quite an industrial design, very much of its era, yet it has a certain character to it. It's a fairly nippy machine too, even running 8.1.

I finally gave this hunk of junk some love and, hey presto. It's alive! All it took was a whole new logic board... 110MHz, 40MB RAM, and what I believe is the original 2GB hard drive, which is quite a "vocal" disk.

Never thought I'd see the day! (Studio Display 15-inch flat panel Rev A)

That's a kind offer but sadly I don't think I have anything good to offer you for a trade. I've spent the last couple of months selling off the majority of my loose piles of electronics bits. All I've really got left on the Mac side of things are a few floppy disks and a mountain of PowerMac G4...

Never thought I'd see the day! (Studio Display 15-inch flat panel Rev A)

I would love one of these! Unfortunately I have only seen a very slim handful for sale here in the UK, all in bad condition and at very high prices. The dream scenario would be to get rid of my B&W Studio CRT and replace it with a B&W Studio TFT. Side note: the reintroduction of the Studio...

    Rehousing a B&W into a Sawtooth case?

If it's an actual Sawtooth (late 1999 PowerMac 3,1) then I'm not sure all the rear plastic parts line up correctly. If it's the first-generation PCI PowerMac G4 (PowerMac 1,2) then you can swap everything over, even the logic boards. My question is: why would you do that? Just sell the B&W...

    G4 MDD shutting down issues

@tidymeup it would actually be a prudent move to check that no one has tried to overclock your MDD's CPU or system bus previously and done a bad job of it. You can check your multiplier settings using the info on this webpage.

ISTR that it's the cache chips that fail on these CPU cards. I'm sure someone will chime in to correct me.

    Nubus Video Card Info

Both myself and @Paulie got ours from Japanese proxy auction sites. Mine was dirt cheap, paulie's still very reasonably priced. I've seen four pop up in the last 18 months or so, so it really is a waiting game with a certain threshold of luck. Don't trust proxy services' saved search...
