I've heard mixed reports of it being bad solder (early lead-free rubbish) or bad chips. From my observations it is more commonly the dual-CPU cards that suffer from this issue so I suspect it's cracked solder from the intense heat that these cards are subject to. In short: the chips need to be...
@ClassicGuyPhilly That's actually Birmingham Town Hall. It's a stunning building both inside and out and has a fascinating history - well worth a read!
@Kouzui Sorry that I completely missed your update! I am really thrilled that the pinout works. It seems that, after the better part of three decades, the elusive DB-15 to DB-9 pinout for the Pivot is finally available online.
Fingers crossed that I can one day get my (well, my brother's)...
@demik @Phipli oh yes, I've seen the chassis used as a heatsink plenty. I've just never seen a component like this just floating, connected only by a block connector! Having given the rest of the unit a once-over it seems like they really had no other place to put it, as the two main control...

On the right hand side, the black labels are the ones I ascertained from following traces from the components and the red labels are the normal DB-15 VGA pins. Composite sync was a bit of a mystery, apparently. The shoddy second attempt at a layout diagram is, I...
This is the clearest photo of my Ti 4600 that I had to hand. Hopefully it's of some small use. I can at least confirm that there should indeed be another TSOP-5 at U817.
If needed, I can take some better quality macro photos. The image above was taken in 2015 on a contemporary smartphone.
I was just riffing on a rather obscure joke from Apple's early '00s keynotes. Pretty much every time Steve mentioned that something was made of polycarbonate he would mention bullet proof vests. I think the first time he does it is when unveiling the B&W G3 and the last time he does it is at the...
