    Socketed vs Soldered ... Fight!

Interesting question, but I doubt the CPU packaging makes any difference. What could make a difference is the mask version of the CPU and other differences with supporting chips. I am guessing socketed boards are earlier versions of the CPU, so they might actually be not as good since chip...

    SE/30 booting off CF success

bbruan, I think you are onto something here. I have been looking into industrial flash cards and SLC based flash CF cards and they seem to be better performers [~1.6MB read and ~.5MB/s write], but only an incremental improvement. Being designed for embedded systems, they might be paying...

    Capacitor Replacement Thread . . .

Guys/gals, sorry if my previous post was unpleasant. My main point is to try to maintain reliable info in the forums in general. If you have suggestions to parts, indicate whether or not you actually installed them to ensure they are of sufficient quality and fit. If you have not used them...

    Capacitor Replacement Thread . . .

jt, the second SE/30 thread link still has incorrect information in the first post. It lists radial leads instead of axial leads. The 1uf cap may also be the wrong size. I would be very annoyed to order those parts and have them being the wrong parts. Please correct or put a disclaimer that...

    Capacitor Replacement Thread . . .

+1 to what bbraun said. jt, maybe just have a thread you own where the first post is a wiki, but you maintain. People can add info at the bottom and then you approve what goes into the first post. Here are parts I ordered at Jameco.com. I think the parts are even less expensive now...

    Caps! -- Macintosh SE/30

Mk.588 did a good job outlining the different components. I think techknight, trag, jdw and others also covered it in different ways. I am not an electrical engineer so I defer to those more knowledgeable about picking the best components. I offered my own take when I found out about polymer...

    Caps! -- Macintosh SE/30

The first two caps recommended by uniserver are the incorrect form-factor, they should have axial leads, not radial leads. Mk.588 has a good guide here: http://tinyurl.com/7r7jjor

    Caps! -- Macintosh SE/30

Agreed, and having all these threads on caps is diluting the good info already contained here in the forums. Also saying things like twist off caps and promoting other lazy methods of fixing stuff is frustrating to see. Think of it from the perspective of someone new coming here trying to find...

    Capacitor Replacement Thread . . .

I would be bummed out if I found a Christmas tree farm of BIG electrolytic caps on my board, but not as bummed as an irrepairable board due to capacitor acid leakage. I just posted the following elsewhere, but since this thread is a gathering of knowledge, I'll re-post here. Yeah, they do not...

    SE/30 Capacitor Trouble

Yeah, they do not have a fluid inside of them. They seem to get a good recommendation as a high reliability tantalum alternative from NASA: Source: http://nepp.nasa.gov/files/20389/09_005_GSFC_Williams_Liu%20APC%20Final%20Report.pdf

    HTTP block device driver

Cool, yeah thanks for including it, I tinkered with the shading a little more. olePigeon, feel free to improve... It does look a lot like iCloud, I was trying to go for a hybrid of 1991 and 2012, so I guess that's what happened. Name-wise CloudFloppy could bridge the eras, but sounds kind of...

Macintosh Plus Internal Hard Drive *Mod*

Yeah, if I was a Mac at Uniserver's house going to be opened up, I would be scared. :I Here's another config example that could work if there is room. You would still need to desolder the chip and install a socket though unless you can reach the back pins that need a connection.

    Capacitor Replacement Thread . . .

"Don't copy that floppy or twist that cap." I had some corroded pads that made it difficult to remove the remaining legs after doing the cut method. Covering the area with a flux pen and applying heat from the iron cleaned it up pretty well. Be gentle and let the heat and flux do the heavy...

Macintosh Plus Internal Hard Drive *Mod*

:-x I was brainstorming a way to do the hack without desoldering the chip since some people might be uncomfortable doing it. Other than soldering wires, I do not see how it could be done unless there is a cool IC stacking method. Rainbow ribbons seem so Apple though, at least before they went...

Cool icons. The stock ones are cool too. Just to clarify, my graphic was intended for inside the control panel GUI. :b&w:
