Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Thought it would be better to have a separate topic so anyone finding this by search/Google could see it more easily.
I installed four 9-chip, 30-pin 1MB SIMMs into my newly built Plus, and when it boots upon performing its RAM test, I get a Sad Mac code 030ff0. Googling around indicates the...
Easy way: Open up the case, look for areas where it isn't coated in the ferric material but hasn't been exposed to sunlight, compare that color to the exterior.
Hard way: Probably a serial number, but FWIW, mine was one of the M0001A variants that did not list memory on the back (i.e. Macintosh...
It works!
It chimed this afternoon with all the parts inserted. However, there's no picture, despite adjusting the screen control pots. The CRT is definitely receiving some amount of energy as I discharged the anode cap without issue. The cap had a hook broken off inside but a solder bodge...
I ended up buying some 8-32 type machine screws with a philips head to secure the parts on the inside so that I could save the remaining Torx driver screws for exterior casing and key parts like the CRT. They grip fairly well, and it's no issue--89 cents for a box at Menard's.
In the meantime...
I guess since this is a good Beige thread to ask questions in, is there a known issue with Mac OS beyond 8.1 that causes it to only play sound through the Personality Card? I have the AV Personality in mine, and while it all appears to be in working order, only when I boot from the FWB utility...
Unplug it, discharge all of the caps, then check for multimeter continuity between ground on the analog board and the live/neutral prongs of the AC input. It sounds like somehow those two got shorted together, because the safety features of your breaker are kicking in when electricity returns...
Apologies for the triple-post as I can't seem to find the edit button (it's usually over by the Quote/Multiquote buttons, maybe I'm just blind)?
EDIT: Found it. Seems that you can't edit posts beyond a certain amount of time from the original post date. I wonder why?
Anyways, I don't have...
Just to update this, I ended up getting a SCSI card that did 68-pin HD SCSI, and used a 152GB hard drive I had laying about that does 10K RPM (this thing is LOUD) and it's working wonders in a triple boot scenario. 9.2.2, 10.1, and Lubuntu are all running aside from one another in this...
Ended up purchasing that tube, we shall see how it goes.
In the meantime, does anyone have some compact era Torx screws on hand that they don't need? I'm not sure what threading/gauge to order and specifically searching for Macintosh screws gets some rather pricey results for a set of screws...
I have a Beige G3 with a dead IDE hard drive. I'd like to mount a SATA drive inside as those are inexpensive and common. I also have a PCI SATA controller that also does RAID.
Is putting the SATA card inside worthwhile? Can older OSes boot from them, or is OS X the only option?
The analog board arrived, and it's a beauty. S/N 8610112431. It looks like the computer it came from was kept in a very dust-free environment and none of the capacitors are bulging whatsoever--although I ordered replacement caps anyway, to make sure it can be renewed for the next couple of...
The tube arrived today. It might be salvageable, but the business end of it is... not great. Waiting on the analog board to get here to see if this is worth salvaging.

EDIT: The vacuum released. It's useless.
The Plus logic board came in today. S/N L60101017. It appears to be a Revision A board, as the silkscreen says MAC PLUS 820-0174-A, and image searching reveals -B and -C variants of the board. The ROM is Revision B. Earlier this week I retrobrited the mouse a bit. It became overcast midway...
This is really cool, going to maybe try this one myself at some point.
What about termination? If you are basically hooking up to the 25-pin SCSI header for the external connector, would you disable the terminator on the SCSI2SD and plug a terminator into the outside, or just terminate it on...
That was an SE, and presumably he talked to the guy at Intertial who also couldn't figure out what he did wrong; possibly a bad board.
Can't tell if you're asking, but the wiki says that v4 boards work with firmware v4 but no later. It's probably a safe assumption that 4.7 falls into the "okay"...
Good to know. I have a dual floppy SE laying around but both of those drives are in service, so I suppose I could cannibalize it for testing but not much else.
Let me know if you do, seems like everyone here gives fair prices. ;D
So a while ago, I procured a Macintosh Plus case. It has all of the mounting brackets, metal internals, etc. and all it's really missing is the Torx bits for the outer case (easily procured) and a cover for the battery. $10, local pickup. Easy peasy, will probably retrobrite it to give it a...
I have a IIci that does this, and I narrowed it down to believe that it's a result of bad caps/broken traces on the logic board that emanate out from the power supply connector. Haven't had a chance to fix it as I just finished moving.
That said, here's what I know: The symptoms disappeared...
