I have the same checkerboard problem with one of my PB 170s... from my knowledge it could be a faulty RAM module if it's just stuck there. My PB 170 with the checkerboard goes to a normal screen after several seconds though, and reseating my module didn't help unfortunately.
I'm a big fan of my LC III because of the easy upgradability among other things that made me love all the pizzaboxes. Though it does get overshadowed by my 475 with the 9.1 GB 50-pin drive, it definitely was a step in the right direction.
I would say it's worth recapping. Even if you don't have much prior experience, it's something you can learn with a little patience. The materials won't be too much either. Trag on these forums sells capacitor kits and Uniserver does excellent work recapping if you don't feel comfortable doing...
First I would definitely try disconnecting the hard drive. I've come across a few faulty SCSI HDs that result in a gray screen/cursor in every Mac that I've tried them in.
If you still get a gray screen after this then I would suspect that the motherboard capacitors may be an issue.
I actually got 3 NIB packages (2 2 MB modules each) a while back mistakenly thinking they were 4 MB sticks. From what I remember, the package specifically mentioned the Classic II/LC/LC II.
Thanks guys! If anybody has an extra Airport card for sale I would be interested. I'm excited that I have a functioning G3 laptop again!
I've kept all of my boxes more or less for the past 5 years. I have more (such as the boxes for my first LC) but unfortunately I don't have any of the...
I got my first Freecycle reply ever a week ago. Person had an iBook and 3 120 GB FireWire external HDs that they said somebody gave them a while back but they ended up not having the time for.
I drove up today and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the iBook was an 366 MHz Indigo with 320...
Unfortunately neither of these are still sealed on the outside, but the twist ties and such have never been removed.
Apple Adjustable Keyboard (French-Canadian)
ADB Mouse II
Damn... my bad. I totally forgot that the AppleColor RGB monitor had a DB-15 connector.
If you have the AppleColor high-res RGB monitor you should be fine with the LC as long as you have the appropriate DB-15 cable. Though I'm not sure if said RGB monitor's resolutions would play nice with the LC.
Today, I decided to head to a local surplus store to pick up some caps, but unfortunately I didn't realize that they were closed on Sundays. So instead, I went to another one of my favorite electronics surplus stores today, Weird Stuff Warehouse.
Total damage was $30.
Apple Extended Keyboard...
Nah, the typical IIgs monitor is a completely different interface from the standard DB-15 on the LC. Most LCs came with the Apple 12" RGB Monitor as standard.
Quite honestly it wouldn't be worth the effort to modify your IIGS monitor since there are other alternatives. I would suggest getting a...
Not sure if you tried this already, but always worth a shot to try and power it up with no battery in it. I bought a "dead" PB 170 for cheap that turned out to work great once the battery was out.
Very nice scores!
Yeah, unfortunately they've been around a lot less. I saw a sealed EtherMac SE for $35 shipped on LEMSwap not too long ago which is a solid deal.

He's using a 575 so I think he may have to switch between the two modes depending on the situation.
From my experience, a lot of them have worked fine. (text adventures, Falcon, Harpoon, Crystal Quest, Uninvited, Deja Vu) I think the only one that crashed on me upon startup was Shadowgate.
If you have any connections with local schools try searching around. Usually they've gotten rid of all the unwanted Mac stuff by now but you can get really lucky. I got around 10 Macs (from a original LC to a G3 desktop) and associated paraphernalia (lots of KBs/mice/random Apple cables) from my...
Kinda late, but saved these from the trash at HS (which switched to mostly PCs maybe a decade ago)

SimCity 2000 is unfortunately box and manuals only but that's fine as I had a boxed copy of it already. First free...
I've said this before... Weird Stuff is awesome and is a must go for anybody in the Bay.
Awesome find! They have lots of SCSI enclosures (sometimes with drives) for cheap so that's always good.
