    Gamer choosing betwen 10.4.11 & 10.5.8

10.4 for sure - Classic is the next best thing to actually running OS9. Were there even that many games for 10.5 that didn't support 10.4?

    Usability of 10.3.9 in 2017

Ah. That's not a huge shock, it seems like everything on these little ARM SBCs uses USB under the hood for everything off of the SOC itself.

    Usability of 10.3.9 in 2017

Original RPi doesn't have wifi. The model 3 version does. No SATA, though. Some of the Orange Pi boards have SATA, but they're not as friendly to get up and running (you have to go through some pretty absurd shenanigans to get it to run in something other than the default 1920x1080 resolution.)

Disabling the glitz effects (drop shadow, etc.) on Tiger is also a good way to perk it up a tad on hardware with weaker GPUs.

    SE/30 as MIDI sequencer

I really need to dig into Mac MIDI software sometime myself... What kind of gear are you going to be hooking up to it? Do share :)

    Use PowerPC for a week?

This is key. I'll grant that high-end flatscreen displays have gotten a whole lot better about depth of color and viewing angle than they used to be (although that's largely dependent on how much you want to spend on them,) but it's still vanishingly rare to find an LCD/OLED display that handles...

    GS OS

    No, GS/OS requires a IIGS.

Where did this mouse crawl in from?

    Nah, that's a generic 7400-series logic chip.

    Vintage Mac Torx

That's interesting - I swear I checked with the area Menards and the local hardware stores, to no avail.

    Vintage Mac Torx

Hah, nice :D I remember having an absolute bear of a time getting a Torx screwdriver of the right size for compact Macs some years ago - I eventually wound up ordering one with a whopping 18" blade just because I couldn't find anything closer to the right size...

    OS for Power Mac G5 -- 10.4 or 10.5?

It's been a while since I tried Debian on a G5, but I wasn't terribly impressed overall - it was on the glitchy side, and only certain GPUs were all that well-supported.

    OS for Power Mac G5 -- 10.4 or 10.5?

Well, for starters, you're need versions of XP and 7 that run on PowerPC?

    OS for Power Mac G5 -- 10.4 or 10.5?

10.4 offers Classic support, which is your only option for running classic MacOS software natively on a G5. As far as web browing goes, TenFourFox will run happily on it and is much more up-to-date than PPC Safari anyway.

Anyone with a ROM-inator II programmer willing to program for me?

Ah, I thought it was the one with socketed EEPROMs. Never mind, then.

Anyone with a ROM-inator II programmer willing to program for me?

If you can get me plain ROM images for the chips, I'd be happy to reprogram them (though I will need to double-check that they're supported by my EEPROM burner - what specific variety of EEPROM are they?)

Apple 2e and reel to reel

I don't think anybody was talking about transferring a cassette ribbon to a reel-to-reel machine; the idea was using a reel-to-reel recorder as a substitute recording/playback device for the cassette storage, since from the computer's point of view it's just a pair of audio in-n'-out jacks.

Apple 2e and reel to reel

...what in God's name is the point of that?

Apple 2e and reel to reel

Well, the IIe doesn't have any kind of special control jack for the cassette interface, so you should hypothetically be able to use any audio source that can both record and play back, reel-to-reel included. From what I read, the highest frequency part of the signal is only ~2.2 KHz, so 7.5 IPS...

    A find that's tangentially related

Yes, it was the same Ensoniq DOC chip used in the Mirage sampler and ESQ-1 and SQ-80 synthesizers (though those paired it with analog filters, whereas the IIgs just outputs the sample data plain.)
