    Quadra 700 OS8.1 and M0437 ethernet transceiver

Try the SBC kernel - it may be hanging because of the SCSI: https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-9.0/mac68k/installation/instkernel/netbsd-INSTALLSBC.gz To get the TCP/IP control panel in to administrator mode, open it, then select "User Mode..." under "Edit", then select Administration.

    Macintosh LCII Restoration

Neat! I love how well the plastics have come out. I think I'm going to try that on one of my machines soon :) Does your m68030 case have a crack in the casing? It's hard to see, but it appears to have some kind of jagged line on it.

    68030 @ 16MHz vs. 68000 @ 16Mhz: how much faster?

All these factors contribute: Bus width. 16 bits versus 32 bits, except for LC / LC II and similar models Memory clocking. m68000 takes four cycles. '020 and '030 take three. ALU. m68000 has 16 bit ALU and '020 / '030 have 32 bit ALU Instruction cache of 256 bytes on the '020 and...

    Quadra 700 OS8.1 and M0437 ethernet transceiver

The mac68k page is here: http://wiki.netbsd.org/ports/mac68k/ You should only need the Booter: https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-9.0/mac68k/installation/misc/Booter2.0.0.sea and an installation kernel...

    DOOM on 7 MHz m68000

Although on the Amiga, this is impressive: I'm sure some enterprising programmer could take this port and bring it to m68000 Macs. It's amazing what these old machines can do!

    “660-700” 660AV accelerator

That's one of several kinds of clock doublers for m68040 CPUs. Since the 660AV runs at 25 MHz, this would run the CPU at 50 MHz when no bus activity is going on. Good score!

    LC II Restoration project

Recap the motherboard. The -5 volts isn't as necessary as it seems - my LC II is only given +5 and +12 volts, and I can print to an ImageWriter II, and sound works fine. -5 volts might be necessary for some serial stuff, depending on what it's connected to, but it wouldn't be the cause the...

    Quadra 700 OS8.1 and M0437 ethernet transceiver

To see if it's hardware or software, you could download a NetBSD installation kernel and the Booter and see if you can configure the network and ping something from within the NetBSD install environment.

AppleTalk is probably on one of the serial ports, then. What happens when you try to switch AppleTalk to Ethernet?

Idea: replace 10.x PPC VNC engine with TigerVNC?

I meant the built-in Mac stuff. I was curious if TigerVNC has features which go above and beyond what Apple already provides. Every VNC I've tried has been fine for emergency use, but I wouldn't ever want to use it regularly.

Idea: replace 10.x PPC VNC engine with TigerVNC?

You think VNC would support more Mac stuff than built-in Screen Sharing?

    Turbo040 in SE/30 "bad F-line instruction"

Someone should make a binary patcher. Floating point exceptions will work on older LC040s so long as the previous instruction to any FPU instruction is not a write. It'd be tricky because you can't change the size of the executable section reliably unless you can also patch all jumps and call...

    Quadra 700 OS8.1 and M0437 ethernet transceiver

Have you tried simply switching TCP/IP from Ethernet to Modem, closing, then switching back from Modem to Ethernet? Sometimes the prefs get screwy.

Swift on Mac OS 9 - not an April Fools gag!

Interesting reading, particularly about the XCOFF support similarities between AIX and Mac OS. https://belkadan.com/blog/2020/04/Swift-on-Mac-OS-9/

How to change screen resolution? (LCIII, System 7.1)

You can probably get the mode(s) you want by buying a Mac video to VGA adapter with DIP switches. I have lots of universal adapters that don't have switches, but when I use one on my LC II, for instance, I only get 512x348. When I use the one with DIP switches, I can also get 640x480.

OS 9.1 in homogenous home network

I absolutely agree. Sometimes, though, it's more about how to do something that's not necessarily interesting to you easily, quickly and cheaply. I'll ask for a few test volunteers for a simple Raspberry Pi image soon.

OS 9.1 in homogenous home network

I have no problem with that. My problem with DoH is that when applications, not OSes, not resolvers, do DoH, we won't be able to see lookups, nor will be able to block them easily. Right now, on most of the networks I administer, all attempts to connect to port 53 anywhere on the Internet are...

    Imagewriter II ribbon cartridge sources?

I bought some black ribbons on Amazon many years ago, but it was too long ago to find in my history. Just read the reviews and look for ones written by people who can write in complete sentences and convey information unambiguously. I didn't know that about color ribbons, but it's good to know...

    Imagewriter II ribbon cartridge sources?

What have you heard? I've used ancient ribbons without any issues.

OS 9.1 in homogenous home network

For some people, a Pi-hole instance on a Raspberry Pi should be good, but it seems that nobody makes a simple, ready to go image. I'll make a NetBSD image for any 32 bit Pi that will boot, get an IP from the local DHCP server, then run a recursive resolver with proper DNSSEC validation. You'd...
