Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
As I read this through, I have a basic question about the SCSI2SD card - let's say I buy one for a Mac SE with a bad floppy drive.
How do I load it up to boot?
That's my understanding too. The problem, as always (if not ultimately) is that the floppy drive will fail. Then what?
And that's where the Floppy Emu comes in to save the day, whose SD is readable by a Windows PC.
On a Windows PC, if I (theoretically) view the contents of a SCSI2SD card, via...
I think I'd prefer the set and forget - but I don't see an easy way to get data onto the SCSI2SD. I read a thread here that provides a way to do it, but I'd have to test it to be sure it works. Otherwise, I'd have to use the error-prone floppy drives on the SE/30 to load it up. Is there another...
I keep vacillating between these two options. But it seems to me like the Floppy Emu is a better choice for compact Macs, because:
You can plug it in externally.
You can manage disk images easily, using a Windows PC.
It works like a HD if you want it to.
What are your thoughts? I know some of...
I, too, would like a definitive link for the caps to use, since I'm a novice soldering iron slinger. There are so many capacitors to choose from, even among similar ones.
I also buy from arrow.com, so the tantalums that I referred to above are these at Arrow.
My understanding is that tantalum is a better choice. They last longer than you'll need them to, and they are about as easy to install. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here - this is just what I've read...
I now have 3 Macs and one HD floppy that mostly works. The single HD floppy drive in the (newly acquired) SE30 doesn't read right off - I have to insert the system disk 2 or 3 times for it to read, but after that, it reads and writes without error. I re-lubed this drive, so the mechanics are...
Is this salvageable?
Any tricks to getting the rust off the board without damaging traces?
The battery and its holder were rattling around inside when I picked it up.
On the up side, it had a perfect condition "Mac Con for IISi SE30" Ethernet card!
I had an extra capacitor that showed the same characteristics - all the others are okay - and I put in that other one anyway.
Considering that this is my first PCB soldering adventure, I suspect it's my dodgy soldering skills. I'm too embarrassed to show you what it looks like... I think I'll...
So I have it together, and it boots up to a distorted screen - split horizontally and I can see distorted icons but the top menu is entirely obfuscated. I'm not sure where to go from here.
I had hoped this would be a trial run for an SE/30 capacitor replacement.
My confidence is pretty low...
I'm one capacitor away from testing - or maybe two. The 22uF is still in the mail.
So I'm checking my work with an Ohm meter, and I find one of the 3.3uF capacitors hardly registers - even when I dig in.
Then I switched polarity on the probes, and BAM - continuity! Is that common for these...
Is there any benefit in using higher voltage rated capacitors? I read a thread about de-rating. If they derate, then shouldn't you get the highest voltage capacitor you can find?
I think I read somewhere that the voltage doesn't matter, so long as it exceeds the voltage of the original - is that right?
For example:
For a 100uF 10V, I could also use a 100uF 50V ?? but not a 100uF 5V
Will do. I can see that one of the smaller caps is leaking, but the bigger caps -
100 uF 10V Electrolytic (EEA-GA1A101) x1
22 uF 35V Electrolytic (EEA-GA1V220) x1
Look like they aren't.
Thinking out loud - the Youtuber listed the capaciter replacement for these two larger capacitors, and he...
