I would suggest:
Add the drive, and format/partition it with disk utility (Don't forget to add the boot in os 9 option)
Make the first partition < 8Meg.
I'd suggest paritions of 7 gig for osx 1-2 gig for os 9 and...
Sorry but I dont. It is not running anymore as I do not use the 266 cpu anymore. Also in the name of truth, the 420 I have was overclocked from a 350 not a 300.
I have run out of the little jumpers. I hope to get more in the next week or so. If I do, I'll try to re-create my oc successes...
Go for it. I've been successful getting my 266 to 300 (pushed it a bit higher but it hung a couple of times) and my 300 to 420! (Too scared to push any more.)
Just get something that can check your CPU temperature. I used the one from powerlogix but it only runs in os9.

Franklinstein mentions the "start up delay" that is/was available on some machines. This is usually set by a jumper on the drive. Your slow on may have this jumper set. If not, you faster may have the ability to set it, possibly delaying it enough to let the other catch up.
If you need another, Its yours for the price of shipping. SCSI 8x, I think originally came with my 635. The only problem is that the tray has yellowed but not the face, giving it this odd two-toned look. :-/

You may have already considered this but you can simply do witout the finder by renaming an applicaiton "finder". When the system booted it would run the "finder" application. This worked on system 6 but I dont remember if it did on 7.
