Because the 575 and 580 use different CRTs, they also have different analogue board circuitry. On the other hand, most of the trickiest Takky work involves getting the Color Classic's 512x384 display circuitry to run at VGA (640 x480) - which the 575 and 580 both do natively. So it might not...
Cool pickup, Bunsen - looking forward to hearing the details when it arrives!
@highlandcattle - I too prefer the Q700 form factor (had a Q700 with Q800 mobo in it that was my favorite Classic & A/UX box ever). But at the same time, I found disassembling and upgrading a Q800 is not nearly as...
I would recommend waiting for a local pickup - these things are old and their video/analogue sections are fragile enough as it is, without the extra trauma and risk of shipping. Not to mention that shipping a large, 40lb. box is likely going to make it cost more than it's worth.
In (or near)...
Cheapest and simplest way, I believe, would be to find an inexpensive Firewire HD enclosure. As long as you ensure the enclosure takes an ATA drive (not an SATA), you should be good to go.
Then use SuperDuper! (or CarbonCopyCloner or a similar program) to clone the HD and make it bootable...
I've come across one or two dead Quantums, but that's gotta be out of about 100 or more. In my experience they're extraordinarily reliable.
I also agree that Maxtors are relatively unreliable. Apparently - and I'd never heard this before about any other drive - they have a tendency to get their...
I had one and I loved it. Great little machine.
The only things to think about:
- 48MB RAM isn't much. These often came with 80MB, and they're hard to upgrade - hard to take apart.
- The seller says it comes with the floppy drive but implies that it might not come with the cable that attaches...
There's a retail (non-machine-specific) Tigger PPC install disc that's version 10.4.6. If you can find that, you can use it to install Tiger straight onto your Cube.
I thought these were ROM-limited as to how much RAM they can address. I had a PowerCard I put on an LC575 board. That board had 128MB RAM and used it all in '040 mode, but when the PowerCard was enabled (PPC601 mode) it could only address 32MB - no way around it.
In my experience, some Airport b cards will use WPA and some won't. It could be the router - but I also wonder if it's the degree of encryption supported by the Airport card. Some earlier cards used 40-bit encryption, while the later ones used 128-bit. Perhaps the 40-bit cards are WEP-only and...
A 10" CRT's neck is too deep to fit into a Classic case.
The insides of a Color Classic also will be a very tough fit - if they will fit at all.
Finally, if you actually have a Color Classic II, that's a pretty rare find - if your CC II currently has a case, even a damaged one, I would...
