Dead G4 Cube Power Supply "fix"

Very cool (no pun intended)... :)

Added an iBook Graphite clam to the collection.

Very nice! Looks like it's in great physical condition. I always like the graphite ones.

Not going to have to worry about the PRAM anymore.

Nice - that's actually one of the most useful conquests one could have!

SCSI --> USB adapter cables, any good?

There are old threads about this on Appelfritter. Here are the basics: SCSI-USB adapters do exist, and they do work under OS X, with the following qualifications: (1) You can connect only one SCSI device at a time - even if the adapter says multiple SCSI devices can be daisy-chained. (2) The...

    Note: CRT Swap

@Concorde1993 - you can easily tell if it's a Trinitron or not. If the CRT face is curved as you move from top to bottom and side to side, it's a shadow mask. However, if it's curved only from side to side, but is flat top to bottom, then it's a Trinitron. There are other distinguishing signs...

PowerMac 4400 with DOS card and display cable

Interesting mystery - but from the photos it seems pretty clear that the only thing from a 4400 on that machine is the name badge on the case. Inside and out it's definitely a 7300, 7500, or 7600.

    Note: CRT Swap

Good to know! I would've thought the 5200 and 5300 series would've had shadow mask CRTs, and the AIO would have a Trinitron. Nice to know that actual tubes can be swapped in some cases.

    NEC Multispin 4xe

It should be fine. SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 differ in their theoretical max data transfer speed, but otherwise they're interchangeable.

    Got a Power Mac G3 B&W

@ kite210, glad your optical drive swap worked. Re the SCSI connector, that's an HD50 connector. They were more common in the PC world; Macs used Apple's own 25-pin DB25 connector at the computer end. Most (though not all) peripherals used the larger, Centronics-50 connector (though some...

Leopard on a G4 is surprisingly snappy

I know many folks like to disable Spotlight indexing in these situations... but I never quite understood that. Spotlight indexing totally kills performance right after a new installation, because Leopard has to index the entire contents of the hard drive. But the solution to that is simply not...

Leopard on a G4 is surprisingly snappy

I concur. Part of it is that Tiger is already a pretty big RAM hog - so most G4s that can run Tiger well will likely run Leopard just fine too.

    Light duty laser printer advice

Can't speak to power consumption, but I love Brother B&W lasers. Compact, inexpensive, toners last long and don't cost a fortune, toner-save mode makes it even better, and they're tanks. I can't speak specifically to Airport Express - but I have an APE I use with an HP inkjet, and AFAIK...

    3 broken G4 iBooks

Sorry to hear about the problems with all these machines. As far as money goes, you should be able to recoup your outlay, plus a bit more, by selling the AP cards and the hard drives and optical drives.

    It's the strangest thing...

Yeah, my memory is that the installer installs 8.5 first and then runs the 8.6 updater. IIRC I think the 8.1 CD did the same thing: 8.0 install followed by 8.1.
