Yup, Null-modem adapter. When you got your Apple "printer accessory kit" it would have a straight-through serial cable and one of these in it to hook up your printer.
I compared my RAID card to the one in the eBay listing and it appears to be almost the same. While the card in the listing has the two ROM sockets populated, the Apple card only uses the one. Would removing both on the new card and only putting one in on the new card be a problem? Don't know...
I just re-did a Laserwriter II. The "A/C power block" at least in the US versions is the same as the HP Laserjet 2. Here are US part numbers:
HP SX-ACPM-B
RG9-0205
If you can find the European equivalents I think you should be OK. Common symptom of failure of this part is two flashing red...
@trag - This looks like your best shot currently on eBay. It's the bottom socketed chip on the lower left near the battery and card edge connector that holds the magic - or at least it did for me. I replaced that one with the chip from my ruined Apple RAID card and all was well.
I see a couple...
I'm going to say that yes, there is probably a performance difference, but in everyday use I don't know if you would notice anywhere else other than benchmarks.
If you were in the '90s running real workloads through this guy you might be able to tell some difference, but I, at least, wouldn't...
IBM 07H1059 MYLEX D040351-0-IBM PCI RAID 2 CHANNEL ADAPTER 07H1058
This is the one I bought. Let me look at eBay when I get to a real computer tomorrow and I’ll see what they have. There are a lot of variations in these cards and I can tell what at least looks correct.
I believe the answer to all three of your questions are "Yes", though I don't think we see how big the Silicon disk is anywhere - you'll have to check and make sure - the icon is generic. I believe the max is 4MB, though.
Just a note about the Silicon disk - it will drain your battery...
I noticed the mix of tantalums with electrolytics on that board. I've seen it on a few other Apple boards as well. I'm sure there was reason, whether it was a good or bad one, who knows...
Agreed - you have a lot of continuity checking to do on this guy. I would never call myself good at soldering, but this is not a finesse job. You will need to tone out a lot of connections just to see if the new caps are making contact to the next component down the trace.
I've done the...
No - I don't think so. According to the FAQ at FloodGap, you should not apply the IBM patches for AIX but only the Apple version of the update.
See here if you haven't found it already - the AIX on ANS FAQ: https://www.floodgap.com/retrobits/ans/aix.html

Nice! I was going to say I remember some song/dance like this for upgraded Cube on 9, but glad you sorted it out.
I will download that updated set and file it away "just in case".
