    Color Classic issues

Trinitrons are an obscure fascination of mine.  I was pretty obsessed with them back in the day, I just think they are such a cool invention.  They are the reason I like the Color Classic/LC5xx family so much. If you are interested this Wikipedia article is really good...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

Poked around more today, still can't figure out what component(s) are making the sound.  The computer IS very very quiet now that I am running it with a SCSI2SD and a Noctua fan.  Perhaps the noise is normal for the analog board, but you just could never notice it over the sounds of the original...

Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed!

I think I set mine to 350 when I desoldered the caps.  And low airflow, so nothing flies off the board.

Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed!

Not quite sure good sir.  After the hot air desolder, I just used solder wick like in the video.  I didn't need a solder sucker. If you're interested, here is my build thread with lots of pictures.  Motherboard work begins towards the end of the first page...

Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed!

For SMD components, I think so.  You just blast the area around the cap (careful not to hold the heat in any one spot too long) and then pick it up with tweezers. It's also very good for heatshrink, removing glue on PCBs, heating up general areas of a PCB to make soldering/removing components...

Decided to try my hand at recapping. Guidence needed!

A little unrelated to where the discussion is at the moment, but: I would highly, highly, highly recommend you buy one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/301828051023?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It is very easy to use and gives professional results, with very...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

I think you may be on to something Bunsen, I was poking around and it seems like the entire High Voltage area is making that sound.  Not just the HOT as I originally thought. Maybe it is just the old age of the components?  I am happy to leave it the way it is, I just don't want something...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

@SE30_Neal,  Thanks man  :) So, I replaced all of those film capacitors (all four around the HOT, and the filter cap in the power supply).  The HOT is still squealing! Can anybody give me any suggestions?  I have no idea where to go from here.

    Regarding the 575 vs 580

The display on the 520/550/575, once you recap and adjust the analog board, is absolutely stunning. Gorgeous picture tube.

Ever seen this Apple monitor before?

I don't know much about them from a technical standpoint, but I really like some of the later (2008+) Panasonic plasmas.

    Restoring my Childhood LC

Hey man, best of luck.  It's going to be a very involved project but should be worth it.  I have no experience with him, but I have heard Uniserver is the man when it comes to recaps. If you want to do it yourself, I'm in the middle of restoring an LC550 right now and learning as I go.  I had...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

Thanks guys, it means a lot.  I wasn't sure if anybody was following this thread haha. I need to get the analog board completely squared away before I move on to servicing drives and peripherals.  I've gotta get that squealing Horizontal Output Transistor (HOT) problem fixed, it's really...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

Thank you for the kind words Powertrip!  I am very happy with how this project is going.  Recapping the analog board was an extremely tricky and nerve-wracking endeavor, so I am glad I got that over with.  It took seven hours straight (with a few breaks in between to clear my head.) The ringing...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

Today I received so much fresh electrolyte in the mail, that the mailman asked me if my name was Gatorade*: *this may or may not have actually happened Here is the patient just out of surgery sporting all new Nichicon capacitors: I also replaced the original fan with something a little...

    Tweaks for System 7.1

Thank you CC, I'll install SuperClock and look into Decor!  That definitely helps! Sounds like I need to be careful with what I add, otherwise I would have been better off just keeping 7.5

    Tweaks for System 7.1

Mods, I just realized I should have posted this thread under Software.  Could one of you move it for me?

    Tweaks for System 7.1

After trying a few different versions of MacOS, I have gone back to System 7.1 on my LC550.  7.5.3 felt a little sluggish.  7.1 is very fast, but a little barren.  There is no clock on the menubar, which I really miss.  There are no desktop patterns.  It's really killing my Vintage Macintosh...

Imac G3 CRT flickers and clicks every 15 mins and when turned off sizzles

Slot load or tray load iMac? I had a Rev. A Bondi Blue tray load about 7 years ago.  The flyback was on its way out, and it would do the snapping every 10-15 minutes thing.  I replaced the flyback (6174Z-1003G) and that fixed the problem. If you have a tray load, that could be your problem...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

Thank you for that info techknight, I'll look into that.  Is there any chance you could point out to me which part of the flyback is the core?  There are some small cracks on top of the flyback that I was going to seal with silicone.  If you look at the full-size picture of the Analog Board, you...

    FPU and SCSI2SD for LC550

I woke up in a 90s Macintosh sort of mood today, so the LC came out for a little more progress. Will be ordering all new caps and a new fan soon.  Wish me luck!
