I'd keep the 133. Does not run any different, really, than the 166. The 117 does not have the secondary cache, I believe.
I have seven 1400s - I really should sell some one of these days, but I like them too. But since I got into Pismos, I am not using them much.
I have a PB 1400 that is prone to this, and the cause on that machine is a crimped screen cable. Try gently flexing the display to max tilt for the hinge, then come back towards perpendicular from the keyboard. You may find the problem relieves itself. I always have to remind myself when this...
It is possible to use a flat metal screw to hold the two halves together, if the plastic post breaks off inside the monitor housing. Use a very small bore drill bit to very gently (a hand crank drill is best, really) go through the hole all the way through to the other side, then get a phillips...
Nice!
I have a Pismo outer/inner box but not a 1400 box. I'm not much one for extra stuff (no room), but the accessories box for the Pismo does look nice on a shelf in my office - it has that sexy side shot of the laptop...
Restoring another Pismo...this is the same one that had the sound card defect...another oddity has presented itself.
A known working AirPort card was not seen by the unit (no info shown in the system profiler), but a Motorola WN825G wireless card inserted in the PCMCIA slot works just fine.
If...
Thanks, ph! I will give that one a good teardown in August at the same time I do another one with a cracked top case. I've been amassing Pismo parts, I may even have an extra sound board. The Pismo is great to work on, yes, I would rate my technical competence as very average and I did a full...
Strimkind - thanks, I will check those settings and give it a try.
I finally got a good work hook using the Orinoco card in a different part of the building, I think the wifi here that I use is weak in my office. The original Airport card works OK, a Motorola card works OK but the Orinoco...
You might also try stepping the 5300 down to OS 8.6 if 9.0 is proving too much of a memory/resource hog. 8.6 is a stable OS and is about the lowest for easy operation with the Orinoco drivers.
S - the WannaBe text browser is good on the older Powerbooks, I use it frequently. You could set that site to be the home page for him. The URL window is funky, you have to highlight and replace the whole URL with WB, double or triple clicking does not select the whole current URL.
I use Eudora...
No, I mean I get good sound via the headphone jack, but nothing coming out of the speakers, and mute is OFF.
Seemed kind of odd to have both of the speakers blown, but I suppose if it took some kind of power hit, anything is possible. I bought this one expecting the logic board to be fried, but...
Restoring another Pismo...interesting, there is normal sound via headphones but not through the built in speakers. Odd for the speakers to be blown but the sound card itself to be OK? Anything else I should try or look at re the speakers? I did a PRAM reset and PMU reset; nothing changed.
The...
Power Pup - thanks for the ideas. I only tried to re-install the Orinoco drivers because the Airport software was acting so weird and not seeing the network, initiating short term freezes etc. But I don't know how to make OS 9.2 see the card as a WaveLan card rather than an Airport card. That's...
My 2nd Lombard, the one running 9.2.2, has become unable to connect with wireless. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's wrong...it's just weird.
Hardware seems good, both the laptop and the Orinoco Silver card. I re-loaded 9.2.2 as a clean install and also tried 9.1 with a...
I know that an Orinoco Silver or Gold card are seen by OS 9.2 as a native Airport card - no additional drivers needed. I have only used it in a Lombard, but I imagine this would also work in a WSII. These are readily available on eBay for less than $10.
Unfortunately my one Lombard has...
Yeah, interesting. If this bumped the Pis up to a G4 it'd be very neat, but the heat trade off here relative to speed seems like a mixed proposition at best...
I will give that a try, thanks! The alpha Camino is better, a definite improvement. One of these days, I also need to get one of my Pismos up to a full 1ghz of memory and see what that does. My highest one is 768mb...
Nobody? I see where to order the Sanyo HR-4/3AU cells from...they are still available. My soldering skills aren't great, but if they have tabs on the batteries, maybe I could attempt this. Certainly cheaper than a "new" battery...
I'm interested in having just one PB 1400 battery that has decent runtime. Both of my aftermarket BTIs (from Wegener) are now fairly shot. Anyone here doing battery rebuilds for a fee? Or, anyone know of an online service that did a good job with a 1400 re-cell?
J
Thanks for the suggestions! I downloaded the Camino new 2.1 alpha version, and it seems a bit zippier, at least on my work wi-fi. I will test at home tonight. I have set it to suppress ads, but not flash, and to play animations once.
