Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Good luck with it - hope you get her going again! I've had mostly good luck with my Pismos - the one time I thought I had fried one by stupidly not remembering to pull the battery when adding RAM, and even then, it was OK in the end.
From the thread, it looks like you have really reset the PMU...
Two other small ideas:
1. The CPU card - make sure it really is in there - it takes a very firm press to make the connector engage.
2. Memory mismatch - if there are different speeds of memory in there, try removing smaller MB one and see what that does, if anything!
I feel your pain! Good luck.
On my Lombard that is running 10.4, the Motorola WN825Gv2 card works well. These are available for around $8-10 on the 'bay. My memory is that Tiger recognizes it as an Airport card with no additional drivers.
(With my other Lombard that is running 10.3, I can get the Orinoco card to work at...
Yeah, the bus speed and low RAM ceiling make these mostly useful for typing near a power outlet. Since I moved on to Pismos for my daily drivers, I mostly haul the 1400s out for nighttime typing, just when I want a change from the Pismo keyboard (which is not too often).
If you can find a...
Alas, the RAM cards are very hard to find for the 1400s. You may want to keep your eyes peeled for parts machines that have 32mb or 48mb cards inside them.
I have one 117 unit, have not found a huge difference in speed between it and my 166s for normal operations. While the 117 gets that "road...
Hey, there's one up on eBay right now with a low starting price and 1 day 8 hours left to go. Replacement power run cord but the correct brick. If I were you, I'd try to snag that one!
What does that one look like, what are the specs, plug type? I never had a Blackbird but I do have some extra power bricks stored about - 5300 style, 1400 and Pismo style, one older duo type (I think) that came on a trade and some of the ones from the 100 series.
ONE DOWN! Phreak, it was indeed the cable on the Airport card! Typing this from the beastie...Airport card firmly re-tucked in its innards. Silly me, I thought the external card and the internal card would be on the same cable. So, that problem solved. The sound card issue may have to wait until...
None of my eBay Pismos have cost more than $75, and most had working batteries and AC adapters. Keep looking. There is a 500mhz one on there now with no price reserve that looks clean. RAM is cheap, about $25 for a 512MB stick.
Or, this one...
On the Airport issue, tonight I swapped that card into another Pismo and it works just fine. So the problem is definitely confined to this machine. I put in another known good card and this machine does not see that one either.
Phreakout, I looked for a Preferences file related to Airport under...
I've rotated back to this machine again in my Pismos and may do a teardown soon to see if I can fix the Airport card issue and the sound issue. One odd thing is that when I go to the Sound control panel, the only option presented is "Built In Headphones" - the built in speakers do not even show...
Yeah, seriously, I'd leave that alone unless it gets worse. I think that looks in great shape for being 20 years old!
My two PB150s are holding up so far, but they are about 5 years more recent...
Again, for parts, I can't say enough good things about TonyZZ on ebay. Good prices, fast shipping, communicates well and promptly. Good luck with the restoration!
Pismo parts are very plentiful on the 'bay, you can find almost everything you need at a fairly reasonable price.
Tony ZZ on eBay (no relation) has fast shipping, good communication, fair prices. He also has a nice supply of batteries (original Apple ones) that he gives assessment of condition...
Recently had to replace my PRAM battery in my Classic II, that solved my startup issue. Can't remember if the screen looked exactly like this or not. I got some variability, I remember. It is probably the caps, but do replace the battery first and see if that changes anything. A $3-4 attempt...
I understand your feelings. I currently use my Pismos and Powerbook 1400s because of the keyboards. I also have a couple of Powerbook 5300s, and I would rate those as inferior to either the Pismo/Lombard keyboard or the 1400. The 1xx keyboard is very, very sturdy. If you have a very aggressive...
CelGen - just checking all angles, have you fiddled with the brightness and contrast buttons? After a reset, I often find I have a black screen but pressing the toggles up turns the screen on again.
If dead, I think you could still find a donor "c" type screen on the 'Bay.
Oh, I've had some reset issues where it seems I had to really do the reset cycle several times - like battery out, unplugged, then powered with AC power, then several pressings of the reset button, etc. Experiment. I've found them to be "cranky but robust."
One tip - try moving the display gently back and forth in your 1400. I have one that's prone to some video issues, and it's always been as a result of the display cable getting crimped somehow. Moving the hinge always resolves it eventually.
I have seven 1400s, and have never had to extract the...
Ah, those are great keyboards. Huge, too, as I recall. I still have one or two tucked away, but they have yellowed badly.
I recently bought a NOS white IBM keyboard from the mid 90s to go with my remaining Win 98 Dell machine that I keep for certain Win 98 games - that keyboard has a similar...
