Getting a PowerBook 1400cs! I have some questions

I can answer some of this... Yo yo adapter is fine. You can swap screens but far easier to do with swapping the screen/top case assembly than taking apart the top case. See if you can find a whole assembly. Best OS is 8.1 or 8.6; 9 runs but is very slow. 8.6 allows use of a wi-fi (orinoco) card...

Best "line in" solution for a Pismo?

Just wondered what product(s) people are using to get a better line in function for a Pismo. I want to record some LPs and cassettes over winter in Audacity, and it would sure help to be able to do that on one of my Pismos rather than tying up our main desktop PC. I once tried an Audacity rip...

    1400c - took a punt.

I really do need to sell some of mine, I am not using them since I got so deep into Pismos. I will probably list some in the sale area later things month. I do love the keyboard and screens, they are nice machines. Better to use at home as they are fairly heavy!

Pismo with G4 550mhz Getting a tad warm

I agree. Even the stock 400 and 500mhz CPUs run pretty hot for me. And the 400mhz in the Lombards run very hot too and both of mine have case cracks right below the CPU as a result. Seems like you will need to do something to help more heat dissipate!

Current DVD drive to fit a Pismo?

One of my Pismo DVD drives lost its faceplate today; I would like to retrofit a replacement drive into the housing. What are some current inexpensive drives that work with the housing/connector? I did one of those retrofits a few years back, but I forget what drive I used...

Anyone with Pismo Li-Ion Battery Restoring Tips?

Interesting, finished going through my batteries, quite a bit of variation there but decent life in most of them. All are Apple originals other than the 2 NuPower ones. capacity mAh: 1863, 1934, 3893, 2924, 3425, 3685, 5950 (NuPower 1), 4032, 3051 (NuPower 2). One left to test at my Pismo that...

Anyone with Pismo Li-Ion Battery Restoring Tips?

I am in the process of checking all my remaining batteries for maximum charge. Not too bad. The worst is about 2900mAh, the best so far my NuPower #1 that had 5950mAh. If I keep using them in rotation, I hope to keep them running for several more years. Looks like fewer new batteries are being...

Anyone with Pismo Li-Ion Battery Restoring Tips?

Thanks. Yes, seems this is not going to work. I've cycled it many times, and tried a freeze-thaw to see if I could get anything different with those darned electrons. The charge capacity has continued to drop every time I cycle it, so the processor is tracking the lack of charge life. It went...

Anyone with Pismo Li-Ion Battery Restoring Tips?

Took a chance on a new old stock Apple Li-Ion on the 'bay, for $20, as I had bought one a couple of months ago and it came back to life very nicely. This one, not so much. Any advice from anyone re info below? Battery is recognized; can charge; charge drops from 100% to 0% in a matter of about...

Powerbook 1400 WiFi - Possible to connect with WPA2 encrypt?

Probably a short term thing as parts of our guest wifi do use a wpa2 protocol but for now, the bigger guest node is still open...

Powerbook 1400 WiFi - Possible to connect with WPA2 encrypt?

No, home has wpa2 but work is guest wifi just with javascript for the acceptance of permission. The only tough spot is having enough ram to run classilla and os 8.6...

Powerbook 1400 WiFi - Possible to connect with WPA2 encrypt?

Got up and running on the work network today...running Classilla 9.3.2 successfully on an Orinoco Silver card on our hospital's open network...currently successfully browsing the Washington Post's mobile site. Not too bad for a 1996 machine with 40mb of hard RAM in it! Need to shift my one...

Powerbook 1400 WiFi - Possible to connect with WPA2 encrypt?

Shoot, thanks, sounds like that's a non starter then. The 1400s I had web ready are running 8.6. All my Pismos and Lombards are on 10.4.11 and can hook to WPA with the airport cards and can connect to WPA2 using the pc csrds...the airport card won't do it...

Powerbook 1400 WiFi - Possible to connect with WPA2 encrypt?

I mostly connect at home with my Pismos, but was thinking of trying to get the 1400s back online too from time to time, just for newsfeeds. We have a new Mediacom cable modem, though, and it uses WPA2 encryption. (Got sick of dealing with CenturyLink for service problems.) With the Pismos, I...

Powerbook G3 Lombard 10.4 Wireless card

When you are in 10.4.11, the Motorola wn825g pc cards work fine with the wpa2 encryption. Am using those now for both home and work networks.

Caps! -- Macintosh Classic II Rev. 2 (Enhanced Sound)

I think my board finally needs recapping - put in a new CMOS battery tonight, she booted up just fine, but then went to checkerboard after a screen freeze. Anyone recapping the Classic II board for a fixed fee? I may do that, or just offer the old girl up for parts as I really can't use a...

Grabbed a nice PowerBook 1400cs/166 with extras

Interesting that the batteries still have that much life...wonder how the previous owner maintained them? So odd, but I am glad for you!

    Bought a near mint Pismo

Thanks for the report! Very interesting, I may have to invest in one of these in a couple months. Let us know about the battery life effect after you've had a chance to judge, Hugh. Got a sad surprise yesterday - Other World Computing (NuPower) has discontinued their excellent Pismo-series...
