I'm confused...the 5300 does not have USB, if I am remembering right...?
(Raoul, if you ever want to investigate Lombards (G3 400mhz) with a working battery, PM me. I have two for sale that are in decent condition, those didn't move when I did my sale last year. Happy to send photos, specs. Or...
If you are able to make it work for you in school, you'll have to post your experiences! I once got a 1400 to work wirelessly with Orinoco cards, but not ethernet...and I think I never got there at all with the 5300s.
On a Pismo, you could have OS 9...not sure about the iBooks though...if the classic OS is what you want. And that would limit your internet ability like you seem to want. Classilla is ok but not exactly a great experience to use all of the time, whereas TenFourFox for OS X is great and very useable.
Just happened across this...wow, have to say, I think you are going to be fairly frustrated on a daily basis using that 5300 in law school. I had two, and know what all the limitations are. Even apart from the battery issue you are facing. A nice compromise would be a fully decked-out G3 Pismo...
Sos, Interested in any notes, part numbers or photos when you attempt a main battery rebuild - that's something I might still try to do one day. All of my PRAMs are dead, but don't really want to go through what it takes to get to that...not quite as easy as on a Pismo.
After years of wanting one to play with, finally the skies parted and I got a number of G3 and G4 ibooks the last few months. The Pismos were getting a little slow for web activity. So now have several 500s, 800s and two 1.33ghz G4 models. All are running well and I have a mix of old and new...
Very pretty 270! Those were the hot machines at the ad agency I worked at in the 90s. All of the bigwigs had them so they could carry those rather than a "bulky" 540. We rank and file account executives just had Centris models, sigh.
I failed to get FW to work recently for this on a 'book save, was successful making a 10.4.6 install drive from the CD I have on a USB stick. The only way the iBook would start up was to to the OPTION key down startup. Takes a minute for the book to "see" the flash drive, then once that appears...
Grim Fandango! I never got to the end, but I'm a sloppy gamer at best. The visuals and dialogue were amazing.
There is a team working on a real-time version of RIVEN, the sequel to Myst. They are pretty far along from the demos I've seen. It's remarkable work. This was work Cyan did not want to...
Sweet! Here is my score of the week. I have been buying up snow iBooks of late as I'd always had a hankering for them. On Monday, I got 3 additional ones for $20 from a Craigslist guy - lots of short semi-unfriendly e-mails back and forth, was kind of touch and go but he came through in the end...
You still do occasionally see working Apple batteries in the $30-60 range, with some limited run times. Even though I try to rotate through mine, and let them fully discharge before recharging, they are all losing a little bit of charge over time. The best aftermarket ones IMO were the ones made...
Thanks, G. Solved it by creating a bootable flash drive and that worked well. Your solution would probably have worked too. (I need to also test my firewire cable, it may be defective.)
I have hit a snag in trying to get one of my iBook 500s loaded with 10.4. I am trying to do target disk mode from a G4 iBook to the recipient G3 500 iBook. I can put the host 1.33 into target disk mode, but it won't keep the OS install disk in the optical drive. If the dvd is in the drive on...
I tried to bring many Pismo batteries back from that state, never got anywhere with it. Some of the original batteries still run fine depending on past use and storage. Third party batteries still out there, the Li-Zone ones for $80 are the cheapest new ones I can find now.
Great! Get that power supply and you will be all set!
Be aware that either of the wireless card will only work with basic (WEP) tyoe network security.
I tried once to get the 1400 hooked by 3com ethernet adapter, and I gave up. Can be done but "harder than it sounds." The Orinoco hook was...
