    Bondi Clamshell!

Darn! I had been meaning to buy one of these back when they cost $60. At $300 I guess now it does make sense financially to resume my over-budget battery rebuilding project. I'd been putting it off ever since the battery melting incident I described above, but there must be a way to complete...

    Macintosh IIsi Retrobrite Method?

I used the immersion method, and it caused much of the metallic paint on the inside of my IIsi to flake away. Personally, I don't mind that it went missing, but if you mind, I bet you could protect the inside of the case with some kind of clear-coat spray paint before retrobriting.

    Macintosh All-In-One Disaster

A question for analog board experts: What happens if you remove the flyback from the PCB for troubleshooting? Will the PSU still function normally without a flyback present? Maybe this could be a way to test if the voltages on the logic board return to normal without a flyback.

    Macintosh All-In-One Disaster

From what I can see in the photos you attached, the logic board just looks a bit dirty, but the analog board looks like it may have sustained more damage. The voltage reading you took provides some valuable information. I'm unsure whether you measured the voltage coming from the +5V rail or the...

    Upgrading iBook Clamshell Display?

Update: I have just purchased this LED upgrade kit for $18 on Amazon. Once I get a chance to try upgrading my laptop, I'll post my results. I also finally found a website where someone else completed this same modification on their own iBook G3 Clamshell. This is incredibly useful as it proves...

    Modern G4 Cube PSU replacement?

I have four of these LaCie PSUs. They are very prone to failure, and three of mine have already died. Perhaps they will make for good donors.

    Upgrading iBook Clamshell Display?

If I can successfully perform this same LED upgrade to my own junk PC laptop and iBook first, I would be interested in fixing your computer.

USB-ADB Converters. Tinkerboy, Drakware, or Wombat?

I have used both the Griffin iMate and the cheap (~$5) Arduino Pro Micro solution. Both work fine, but if you are handy with electronics, I would recommend going the DIY route, because it is equally functional to most other converters and also way cheaper. (a four-pack of Arduino Pro Micros...

    Upgrading iBook Clamshell Display?

While it's not extraordinary complex, I don't think that this would make for a great beginner project. It would require careful disassembly of the LCD panel, removal of the delicate mercury-laced CCFL tubes, soldering, understanding of how to replace an inverter circuit with an LED driver, and...

    Upgrading iBook Clamshell Display?

Another option is to use a replacement LCD panel from a slightly newer model of iBook. There is information available online about this modification, but the biggest advantage is that it provides a higher screen resolution, so that you can fit more on the display at once. Assuming the...

    Missing SE/30 SCSI Controller Chip

I believe that these SCSI chips are still available for sale from Mouser electronics --I bought one brand new last summer. https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/ZiLOG/Z53C8003VSG?qs=FsLZlD%252B%252Bd9cJEZW2nIhyXQ%3D%3D There is a datasheet PDF accessible through the link above --it should have...

G4 cube becomes unstable when ethernet is connected

Here are a few troubleshooting ideas I had: If not sure if this is a hardware problem, but in case it is software-related, maybe trying a different install of the OS could help rule this out? This would certainly be the fastest way to troubleshoot things. I recall that you have a power-hungry...

Reverse Engineering the Macintosh Plus PCB

Is the ROM-Inator just comprised of those two SMD chips in the very center of the logic board? Great work on this project! I can't wait to see the prototype PCBs. :)

Classic II w/ Classic Logic Board - Need help

Unfortunately, this Classic Logic Board has been very badly damaged by battery leakage. I think that it is beyond saving, as many of the traces/VIAs connected to the CPU are damaged. The good news is that there is a project underway to make reproduction Classic Logic Boards. If you save this...

Mac Classic Analog Board Completely Dead

When you recapped the board, was there a lot of electrolytic goo underneath the original capacitors? If so, did you make certain to remove absolutely all of it from the analog board? When I fixed my Classic, the analog board was practically dripping with leaked electrolyte, and I had to take a...

    which macs need recap

I think this is a fantastic reason why the dishwasher method should be avoided. Presumably, similar results could be achieved in a utility sink using a high-pressure stream of water through a hose anyway. (In a pinch, I'd bet that my garden hose set to "Jet" would certainly blast lots of dirt...

Getting over my fear of taking apart the iBook G4.

A few months ago, I did a complete teardown and reassembly of a 12" PowerBook G4 from 2003. There were tons and tons of screws to keep track of, but their quantity was far from the worst part. The spring screws that held the heatsink to the motherboard were connected to some flimsy nuts on the...

Driving an LCD bright white from a gizmo for use as a light table?

I would take a look at this video: I think that it should contain the information you'll need to run the backlight on a TV/monitor LCD panel without providing a video signal.

    Macintosh Classic Logic Board Revival

Here is a scan showing the split power planes from the top of the logic board. This picture shows where the power plane splits on the bottom of the logic board. (Please excuse the uneven sanding in this photograph --I eventually figured out how to sand more evenly, but this is one of the only...

    Macintosh Classic Logic Board Revival

I worked with @Kai Robinson to sand through the classic logic board layers, and I took scans of all the inner layers a few months ago. All of the related posts were lost in the 68kmla crash, but I still have the scans if you need them for this project.
