Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
Awesome --I hope you can get this working! This is something I dreamed about several years ago when the first reverse engineered schematics were being created. I think that OpenBoardView would be super useful for troubleshooting work: instead of needing to look over schematics to find where a...
I just found this on eBay while searching for a Radeon 7500, which doesn't seem to be available in a Mac variant: https://www.ebay.com/itm/251126702780?hash=item3a785162bc:g:F3UAAOSwh1haBsn4
It's a Radeon 7000 that is supposedly G4 Cube compatible for $25 shipped. I don't love that its...
The display's brightness control is now (mostly) working! I bodged the controller board to match the alternative schematics that I found in the control chip's documentation. I needed to reverse-engineer the driver board by desoldering several components, placing the tiny PCB on my scanner, and...
I think I figured out why the brightness control isn't working! I took my iBook apart again and used an oscilloscope to analyze the signals on each of the backlight wire's pins. I expected to see some sort of changing signal when the backlight is adjusted, but it turns out that the only thing...
Thanks for the tips! I threw another 4MB of RAM into my SE/30, and the performance became noticeably better. The game no longer crashes after the first few seconds, and it runs more smoothly. I can tell now that each time the drive seek light turns on, the music stutters, so I think running the...
I saw this video about building an Apple 1 replica a few months ago:
The gist of it was that you can assemble a pretty realistic-looking replica however it is a challenge to find original (and long-since discontinued parts). The obscure computer chips that the Apple 1 used means this project...
I finally got around to doing this project! I am using a Radius Color Pivot IIsi video card which doesn't fit inside the SE/30, but I was able to hack something together outside the machine, and it works! I don't think that I will be able to connect this model of video card to my AppleColor...
I have replaced some of my computer's clock batteries with CR2032 coin-cell batteries. I have never seen this variety of batteries have problems with leaking before, and I couldn't find any evidence of them leaking online either. They are way cheaper than the 1/2 AA batteries that these...
Apart from the burned connector, I think that this SE/30 looks like it is in really fantastic shape.
@JDW made a video a while ago where he repaired a Macintosh SE/30 analog board with a similar problem; perhaps it could be of some use to you (fast forward to about 5:30 in the video for this):
I love how bright the screen gets now. :) Brightness controls kind of work, but they are the one issue I am still working on. The screen just doesn't get dim enough at the low settings for my liking, and the brightness controls are inverted so that max brightness on the computer is minimum...
It's alive!!! :)
I finally replaced the backlight on my iBook Clamshell with an LED module. This upgrade makes a massive difference in overall usability for me, as I no longer need to strain my eyes to read what is onscreen. Now, everything is crisp, sharp, and bright. The LEDs are evenly...
Yes! It is pretty much the same solution as connecting an ADB keyboard. It would consist of building the Arduino Pro Micro solution described above, and using an S-Video-style ADB socket (for the mouse to plug into) rather than installing an Arduino directly into a keyboard.
Whoops! I read your...
I think the majority of the PSU components should be okay in the ultrasonic bath --it's a bit tricky to find quality ultrasonic cleaning information online, as unfortunately, most of it is junk. From what I've read, the main concern is damaging delicate MEMs components on much more modern PCBs...
Cool! I will have to give this a try at some point. :)
I have a color Mac IIsi video card that I bought from eBay for $4 a couple of years ago, and I think I should be able to use it in my SE/30 with some modifications. Perhaps I can figure out a way to adapt the output video signals to my...
I think that you did a good job cleaning up this anode cap. All of my Macs have had degraded rubber anode caps and sooty CRTs like this. I always just cleaned up the mess with an isopropyl alcohol-soaked paper towel. After I remove the degraded rubber, the remaining (non-oily) material had...
To clarify, these are the logic board capacitors. The Macintosh SE and SE/30 share essentially the same analog board and PSU, both with leaky capacitors that must be replaced.
I think that this could be a useful thing to try out. Mac OS9 is usually a lot more tolerant of Macintosh-related files...
I believe I read somewhere that the external metal part of these chargers isn't strictly necessary, and that some kind of headphone-jack connector can be used as a replacement part. I can't quite remember much more than this, and I don't even know if it is reliable information, but perhaps this...
Briefly summarizing my original thread, I have been trying to find a way to display (non-Apple) retro video games on the Apple CRT monitors I already have. I started off (successfully) connecting a SNES to my IIgs monitor, and then attempted to (unsuccessfully) connect my Wii to my Macintosh II...
