Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
I bought 4 4MB SIMMs on e-bay that worked in my Mac II (yay me), so I am up to 20MB now. This was a pull from a Mac II, and I do not know if the seller has access to any more. You might ask him though:

Note that he seems knowledgeable and, at least...
You've got a lot to do :) , but if you get the chance please report on the amount and type of memory in the Mac IIs. Both LazarusNine and I would be interested in knowing.
> Still, it's kind of my fault for not doing my homework.
It is unclear to me (at this point) whether they really know what kind of memory works in the Mac II (and Mac IIx). They pointed me at documentation ("have you read this?") that I did know about and which was irrelevant. It is not to...
Don't know if you can find the "Apple Memory Guide, November 2000" (memguide.pdf - don't know where I found it, but I downloaded it this last July), but it also indicates:
Supported Sizes in MB : 256K, 1, 4, 16
so no 2MB SIMMs indicated there either.
> Sooooo, I was sold on a lie
I tried to buy 4MB PAL SIMMS from Memory Ten (== WeLoveMacs), and could not get anything to work. They did refund my money however, so I doubt that it is lying so much as insufficient information. They lost money on me from paying the shipping for both sets of...
Update ... Ends up that they sent me the wrong memory the first time (and put a sticker on it labelling it as the correct memory, so they didn't realize it until I had sent it back). The next set of memory also didn't work. They are out of parts, so are just refunding me my money.
So, that...
In filling out the RMA information, I realized that the new memory was 70ns while this old memory was 80ns. Are there problems with mixing 70ns and 80ns memory?
And thanks dougg3:
> On page 7, it indicates you're right (assuming you don't have IIx ROMs installed). Bank A can only take 1 MB SIMMs, and it has to be populated before you can put anything in Bank B.
Good to have the confirmation that I am reading this correctly.
> I think 20MB is max without the FDHD kit.
That's what I was shooting for.
> Also you said you have a PMMU, you are sure its not a HMMU, right?
Yep. (I have both, but the PMMU is installed.)
> Its such a messes up machine when it comes to RAM.
Until I started playing with it...
Thanks for the suggestion, but the information I have is that larger than 1mb SIMMs only work in Bank B, and Bank A has to be fully populated before putting anything into Bank B. Is this incorrect? (Worth a try in any case. Maybe I'll get a more detailed error message.)
I decided to try putting more memory into my Mac II (currently at 8MB). I purchasd 4 4MB PAL SIMMs from MemoryTen and dropped them into Bank B. The first time I tried, the system started up, but only 4MB was visible. I realized that I was in 24 bit mode, so changed to 32 bit mode and restarted...
Success - the working hard drive was also a Quantum ProDrive and it had fully populated resister packs, so I just moved them across. The other drive is now recognized (and booting the system).
Or perhaps it is a termination issue. Something else to look at (if I can - no resistor packs, so need an external terminator plug?)

... The Macintosh has an internal hard drive
If the Macintosh in the SCSI chain DOES have an internal hard drive, terminate only the other end of...
My apologies - this is a really old topic with tons of suggestions and tools available via a web search - almost too much - but I'm not having much luck and may just be missing something obvious.
I have a non-Apple ROM Quantum ProDrive LPS (100MB) that I would like to use in my Macintosh II...
> also... 466MHz?
I'm a little vague as to the details ... been a long time since I did this ... but I believe that there are dip switches for setting the processor speed (as a multiplier of the bus speed?). In any case, it is a manual process to set this and then check whether the system is...
That's funny - your find is very similar to my main system from 1996 to 2004:
a) Power Tower 180 with an XLR8 Mach Speed G3 300MHz processor card running at 466MHz
B) 448 MB of memory
c) 18GB IBM Ultrastar 18ES (Ultra SCSI Fast) hanging off of an Advansys Ultra SCSI3 card
d) 3Dfx Voodoo3...
I don't remember - I was using a SUN Workstation with a 68020 in graduate school, and that was my rationale for taking out a loan and paying the big bucks when I went to my first job (still had some work to do to finish my dissertation, and needed something to use at home, that had LaTex, etc.)...
Replying to a 6 year old thread may not be the optimal strategy, but this was my thread :-) . I finally got around to replacing the batteries in my Mac II (life's been busy this past 6 years). It fired up, but then I got an error message:
0000000F
0000000C
which apparently translates to...
I tried firing up a Centris 610 for the first time in two years. It sounded like it was starting up okay, but I got no video. (I tested the monitor on a different system - the monitor is working fine.) I opened up the case, and nothing looked unusual. There is a PRAM (?) battery, so I thought...
