Yeah, I don't think that the FDHD manual would have retained that name once the drive itself was re-branded. At a minimum, the name FDHD would have been replaced throughout the manual. Otherwise, I don't think there would have been any difference in the mechanism, or operation of the drive...
So here's a recent Tecmar drive sale on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250993088572
So the seller says this:
This suggests that a compatible drive could be popped in and formatted by the Tecmar software. Anybody got any idea what kind of drive would work in this...
FYI, the HD20 is officially not compatible with System 7. Technically Apple dropped support for it under System 6. However, to my knowledge it still works just fine under System 6. AppleShare is perfectly compatible with System 6. Therefore you should create a System 6 startup disk, if 7 is not...
This actually makes good sense to me. You can't see it in any of the pictures posted thus far, but there should also be a vent under the handle which seems like a Jobs' compromise, effective but hidden. It was probably a gradual evolution - hidden under the handle, then when that wasn't enough...
I'm not really sure I understand what this is ... Is it a 512K board installed in a custom box and upgraded to a Plus configuration with the 128K ROM, and SCSI board? I don't see where the RAM has been upgraded though.
In any event if that's what this is, it's hardly a novel concept. From the...
Yup. That's the repair manual. Looks like the original 1989 FDHD issue as well. I was actually referring to the user manual. Either way, still looking for the SuperDrive branded manual, which corresponds to the later SuperDrive branded external case (which looks exactly like the one you pictured...
I just picked up an FDHD external floppy disk manual. The part number is 030-1507-A and copyright 1989. Typically by this time, most first edition Apple manuals were issued initially with a "-A" suffix, so with a 1989 copyright date, I'm assuming this is the case as well, as I believe this drive...
Just re-reading this, it's interesting to me that the first successful hard drive for the Mac (even Apple used them internally, and reluctantly waived the voided warranty policy if customers installed them), was essentially IDE based. Essentially, Apple rejected the third party solution, and...
The board will not function correctly without the RAM upgrade as it is missing 4 key parts which are instead placed on the upgrade board, per H3nry's observation. Since it exhibits the exact same symptoms in two different Macs, but also with or without the RAM upgrade, my guess is that this is...
Not to split hairs, but the Colour Classic is easily upgraded with a 575 board (which may have been the original intent with the CC design, until Sculley got it in his head that bigger was better). So in my mind it was effectively introduced if not literally. In much the same way as putting an...
Depends on the drive. A late model 800K drive can format disks as MFS 400K or 800K and read and write with no problems. The OS will format 800K under 512K, but won't work under a 128K as it does not have enough memory. The HD20 INIT can also be used to substitute for the 128K ROMs ... Only you...
Yes, the "cursive" font is NOT the original System font. That particular image has been tampered with and unfortunately is the one that is most widely available and circulated. The Macintosh Plus has the correct font.
I figured this out a while back, and have since forgotten, but today I'm...
Haha trag thanks for the advice, but that lead acid battery died a long time ago ... My purpose for storing most of these batteries is preserving them for posterity. In the case of some of the PowerBooks, the batteries are integral to the case design, so can't just throw them out. I suppose I...
So the gist seems to be:
Plastic will not be a good barrier to leaked battery acid.
Don't store anything airtight.
Reduce moisture.
So here's the follow up. The storage unit is climate controlled so humidity should not be an issue. However, is the suggestion to use silica desiccants for...
Pina actually makes this point when debunking the popular notion that the 128K could not be ROM upgraded. He indicates that following the 800K drive upgrade, a 128Ke can then be easily upgraded to a 512Ke or greater with a clip on SCSI combo board, rather than go through the physical memory...
As I recall Pina approaches the topic as the "official" upgrade of a 512K to a 512Ke. He then approaches upgrading a 128K in this manner under the heading of "Unofficial" upgrades. He then addresses the 128Ke Mac as a viable option despite the fact it is commonly thought not to be possible. This...
As I recall, a lot of software was configured for 640x480 which meant if a default window opened, it would not fit on a compact Mac screen. AFAIK, there is no way to resize the window. Ran into this a lot in the mid 90s.
Yes that is the upper RFI shield. DO NOT remove it, unless you intend to run the 128K for extended periods of time. I say this because it is in original stock condition and should be left that way ... Unless you really intend to use it the way it would have been in 1984 - in which case...
The funny thing is I have never seen ANYTHING that said the ROM upgrade was appropriate for the 128K so I would ask you the same question. The ROM upgrade kit was part of the 800K floppy drive upgrade, afaik, it was not available as a mere ROM upgrade as that would dearest the purpose of Apple...
