Hello MLAers! We've re-enabled auto-approval for accounts. If you are still waiting on account approval, please check this thread for more information.
The serial number and Model number are completely different animals. The model number is essentially badging, but the serial number indicates the actual configuration of the unit. Think of it this way, as the 512Ks rolled off the assembly line, they weren't allocated specifically as an ED, they...
Scott, the Apple IIe Platinum had a revised box. I believe the ImageWriter II had a similar box. It's entirely possible if there was a Platinum Macintosh 512Ke, that Apple eventually updated the box as well once existing stock was exhausted, assuming the only known box I've seen was even...
This is a perfect example of the Internet at work. I do not recall if I've ever seen a beige Mac Plus ED, but I do know I have seen pictures of a Platinum Mac Plus ED. In fact I'm pretty sure this is one:
That said, the popular theory is that the Mac Plus was Apple's most powerful Mac and as...
No you are correct as to your recollection. Thanks for reminding me of Eric's site reference.
This is exactly why I like people to post links or basis to their assertions. Most often it is the stuff of urban legend, and vague recollection gathered from the Internet, construed as facts. For...
Assume you mean the sleeve on the outside of the analogue board? In a 512K it should be a white vinyl sleeve, unless it was replaced with the older coated cardboard one at some point. You run very little risk operating it temporarily without the sleeve on, however, the sleeve is there to prevent...
That's because it wasn't just for the 128K. And as of September 1984, it was bundled in the same box with the system software. By 1986 it was sold separately to appease third party developers.
Based on prices I've seen, you may end up paying as much for the individual items as you would for a...
I dont mean to be impudent, but isn't your question about the tape answered by the title printed on it?

The 128K works differently than the 512K. It only loads into RAM whatever it needs from the System to do what is requested at any given moment, and then immediately purged. That's another reason why it's so slow. It's very efficient, but unlike the 512K does not load in a standard static system...
Napabar, you'll have to better than 3 and an external drive. I've personally run this configuration on a 512K Mac. The disclaimer here is that, that's all I did with it. I didn't actively test it with 3 fully loaded disks and put the Mac through its paces or use filesharing, which would have...
Please, anyone, show any proof of a reference to a 128K ED. It dont believe it exists, and have never seen it referenced anywhere. Lots of speculating going on here. This is how some of these Macs come into existence, because people see idle speculation in forums such as this. A lot of it is...
It was probably limited by the ability of the Mac to handle the directoriy index. Remember, for all practical purposes, the Mac thought the HD 20 was a huge floppy disk. I shudder to think of it manipulating a 120MB floppy disk. How slow would that be!?
Honest, to god, doesn't anybody search any more? There are several links to pictures of these within the Compact Mac forum.
Also, I don't believe there is any evidence of a 512Ke Platinum. I believe by the time it went Platinum, it was only being offered as an ED.
Nice work, thanks for posting.
you already have the answer to this. One of our members, Charlieman, is responsible for the content on VintageMacWorld.com - the very link you reference states that he tried the software with a 512K. It does work, but is not stable.
Also, do a search for TOPS. I...
No it doesn't. Just because other versions absolutely existed along the way doesn't mean they ever left the confines of Apple. Unless you mean "out there" as in a box in some ex-Apple engineer's attic, never to see the light of day again.
And yes they have:

Yes, I've had AirSharing since it was free. I realize now that when I do inadvertently download a file in Safari or Mail that it puts it in AirSharing. Wonder what it would do if I didn't have AirSharing? Either way, it seems more like a, "yeah I can do that" kind of app. So it basically becomes...
It could, but what would be the application with an iOS device? I suppose you mean for use with a 128K and a jail broken iOS device? Without a way to store files, or run them, not entirely sure what could be done? Use an iOS device as an Internet connection to send data from the 128K?
The...
