powerbook g3 wont show anything untill the ssd or hdd is unplug

Not sure if it will help you, but here's what happened with my Wallstreet series. A few days ago I pulled the IDE drive to be backed up via dd in another machine. Got in an SD to IDE adapter, formatted it in Windows to do some I/O tests on the card and then installed everything in the PowerBook...

    PowerBook Duo LCD swap? 280C -> 230

FWIW, I believe MacBench shows cache and FPU somewhere in the current system details. I recall seeing the FPU and other hardware details when running MacBench 1.0 on my Duo 230, and thinking that’s the best info I’m getting without hunting down fancier hardware inspection tools.

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

Think I'll need to give that a try for my G3. I have plenty of spare SD but no CompactFlash cards at home. So that would lower the cost of replacing the original IDE to the raw cost of the SD adapter. I'm oh so happy to be wrong in this case 😄. Given the access methods for SD cards, I expected...

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

SD to IDE would be convenient IMHO, but probably have to fall into the same boat as the SD to SCSI adapters: somewhat expensive with relatively specialized hardware/software to make the magic happen. CompactFlash’s relationship to IDE/ATA seems to have made IDE adapters pretty cheap and...

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

I believe NT and probably 9x/older have the same issue with removables. I want to say where I learned the bit existed was a restoration video on an early ThinkPad. From what I’ve been able to tell, 68k Macs seem to be willing to boot off darn nearly anything it can perform block I/O on with a...

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

Beyond people developing new storage technologies, I doubt it. Back then I was still using a single 5 1/2” floppy system and amazed we had no problems finding disks at the local school supply store. I question somewhat how many folks even thought their solutions would live long enough to be...

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

I would imagine that macOS (and other unix) would print something useful to the kernel or system log when probing the bus, but I’d like to think someone’s made a tool or three by now that can at least dump the card’s parameters. Most of my experience with CF owes to one of my employers...

Help: IDE to Compact Flash not working

Almost makes me wonder if Macs distinguish between cards set to removable/pc card and fixed/IDE modes. I seem to recall something about needing a DOS tool to twiddle how a card identifies itself.

    Spidey01’s first 68k Mac

I like to think everything has it usefulness. Just may be a challenge to figure that out, before something heavy lands on a toe 😂

    Spidey01’s first 68k Mac

My greatest worry was whether or not it would survive being taken apart. That and the risk that I might end up with five of them in the closet as parts machines, lol. Most videos I came across trying to learn more about PowerBooks of that era were focused on the 100 series. Seemed more risky...

Basilisk II - Full Screen Issues

I’d try looking at the emulators standard output and error streams. Might tell you why, or point at what happens. On my iBook G4: full screen BasilliskII just gives me errors about the facilities it wants not being available. So I set the window size to be closer to full screen. Honestl, I was...

    Spidey01’s first 68k Mac

Growing up in front of a Tandy 1000 with a single 5 1/2” drive as part of a PC family, it was well into the OS X era of the iMac and MacBook by the time I met anything Macintosh. By then I was already focused on BSD and Linux systems, so I largely missed the classic operating system. Probably...

USB-ADB Converters. Tinkerboy, Drakware, or Wombat?

For me the Wombat is an attractive prospect because it's both ways (USBs -> Mac /w ADB; ADBs -> modern /w USB) without a lot of effort. As someone that likes older style keyboards that's a plus. You might not care about being able to do both. It also seems like the Wombat has seen a fair bit of...

    RaSCSI Development Thread

When I saw Action Retro’s video, I had just been debating SCSI2SD and sat down to watch. Decided to sleep on going RaSCSI. By then, sold out, so waiting list ftw 😋. Glad you’ve seen so much interest though!

Any ideas for a battery slug?

Lost two thin strips on the inside trying to pry it off, but seems like I was successful in not breaking it. Couldn’t get it on at first, then realized that it has to be slide in from the side like it is when the battery is inserted. Otherwise there’s nothing to catch the edge and grip it on...

Any ideas for a battery slug?

Recently acquired an old Duo 230, and trying to make it operational piece by piece. Since the original charger went poof shortly after test booting the machine: my power solution for testing has been an old Wallstreet series charger. Pretty much, I was just glad the charger wasn’t still plugged...
