    Powerbook 190cs Audio Port missing

My 190cs has an audio out jack, but no audio in - what appears to be the port for that is blanked out on the back panel, but the blank can be removed, which would leave a hole. I presume it's because this is the same casing as the 5300 series, which had both out and in connectors. Or that a 5300...

Going into "startup disk" crashes my G3 pdq

I run my Wallstreet and both PDQs with dead PRAM batteries and they're not at all unstable, booting from their original HDs or the IDE/SD adapters I put in them. One of the PDQs however does the exact same freeze when opening the Startup Disk CP. The other doesn't. All three run the same version...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I'm not convinced about eh cap-goo possibility either because I don't see how that could result in such a highly variable and changing fault. Of course, I don't know that it couldn't either, but that and the fact there seems very little artifacting on the display does make me think it is...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I tried taking a video of the flickering problem - this is a short example. The faded area around the trash and the lower part of the screen isn't visible in person. Typically, the display looks bright and fairly vivid. Not much artefacting either, though some does appear with some of the...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

That's very helpful, thanks! I'll try and get a video tomorrow, though the hinges are definitely not cooperative. That said, I can hardly make them worse I suppose! There's virtually no visible artefacting on the screen, and it is sharp and not faded color. This flickering looks like an...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

The 180c was delivered today - earlier than expected. Hinges are indeed in need of repair, and the system took ages to boot up for the first time, but it then ran quite well. Then after about 10 minutes I got flickering black lines of various thicknesses across the screen. I shut it down for an...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

There's very little artifacting on this 180c display that I was able to see - I know what you mean, because I was looking at another with very distinct ghosting off contrast points in every window. I am looking forward to looking it over at a rather more leisurely pace. It has 8Mb RAM, which is...

    PowerBook 190 strange behavior

The 190/5300 PowerBooks are infamous for the power connector pulling loose from the logic board, so from your description it is possible it needs re-soldering, and checking that it isn't shorting out. It might not be this, but it's a good place to start.

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

That looks like the right part, thanks! Not got a 3D printer, but I think I can find someone who does! I really don't want to do disassembly/reassembly work if I don't have to since I have very little feeling in the fingertips of my right hand, but this PB is worth getting right, so I may have...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

The sickness continues... though for a very good reason (in my estimation). Due soon, a PowerBook 180c, which honestly I couldn't refuse resist. Apparently in good working and physical condition - except for the hinges, which are failing, but still functional, if only just. Pretty sure I'll...

    modern images in photoshop 1.0

I also agree that Graphic Converter is a great solution to this kind of problem. I used it for years, though I wasn't aware it was still in development, so thanks @joshc just grabbed a new copy from https://www.lemkesoft.de/en A bargain for what this software does!

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

Actually, not. I was using it yesterday - or rather, just messing about with it - and discovered that the floppy drive works. The flap is missing and the internal carrier seems crooked, but it reads and writes. It even ingests disks properly, but needs a bit of help ejecting them. I managed to...

    500-series logic board swap?

Too late, I ditched the corroded parts and scavenged what I thought was worth keeping, such as the drives, interconnect ribbons, case screws, keyboard and the entire display assembly, complete with plastics and hinges. I also kept the trackpad and RAM card. The logic board had been worked on...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I have at least one vintage Mac running all day on workdays - most recently that's been my 630CD, but the 170 will make a great alternative now I've got it set up. I have been lucky with tunnel vision for sure!

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I thought this too. It's going to get some usage every day, so I'll keep my eye on whether it changes.

    500-series logic board swap?

Well, that did not go well at all. The 540c has apparently been worked on before, and not carefully judging by the bent pins and connectors, and incorrectly fitted (jammed) parts. But, firstly, taking one of these things apart is way beyond my current level of dexterity and motor skills, and...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I had honestly forgotten what a 170 display was like to work with. I was not a big fan of laptops back then when my original one was new, so I didn't really make use of it all that much, but set against the displays I was seeing at the time, it was pin sharp. This one is amazingly good. A new...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

The 170 after about 5 hours continuous running yesterday while I was messing with it installing software. I don't see any real sign of tunnel vision, but there is s bit of fading in the top-left corner after a time. However, it seems to be running pretty well, and having tossed the '8-ball' in...

Excellent! Thanks all - now the weekend project!

    500-series logic board swap?

This might be a simple question, but can I replace the logic board in a PB 540c with one out of a 520c? My 540c died (again) a few weeks ago, and it looks to me like the main board is rather corroded. But I have an almost-working 520c which has totally broken hinges that was intended to be a...
