    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

The latest is another 5300, but this one was listed on eBay for a whopping $200, quite expensive for an old joke. However, it was described as being NEW. Thinking it was too good to be true, I almost ignored it. Then, decided, perhaps I'd get it anyway, and hope it really was. It arrived today...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

I am, I admit, a PowerBook-aholic. I knew this when in the course of little over a year, I accumulated a PB 180, a 165, a 520c, another 165 for parts, a second 520c for parts (mostly the power supply), though otherwise it was working despite totally busted screen hinges, a 540c (which I broke...

    Andy’s PowerBook Problem

It began, as all stories do, a long time ago. In late 1991 in fact, when I was given a PowerBook 170 by my then boss. A portable Mac, what’s not to like? Except that I didn’t much. I used it when I had to, but desktop Macs were my thing. This continued right the way up to, and beyond, 1997, when...

    Eternal Floppy

I tried HFSExplorer on my M1 iMac, but it doesn't appear to be functional. The software runs, but when I put a Mac formatted disk (from my PB 190 running System 7.5.5) into my Sony USB drive, the iMac can't read it, offers the usual initialize/eject/ignore dialog, and HFSExplorer can't find the...

That's very helpful, thanks! I have never tried the software you've suggested, so this is great information!

    Eternal Floppy

Using PC Exchange on a variety of old Macs (mostly 100-series PowerBooks), I can move data easily between floppy-equipped Macs, and a USB floppy drive when connected to anything from a Windows 10 system, 10.4.11 PowerBook 17-inch, to M1 iMac and MBA. This only works for PC-formatted floppies...

PowerBook 3400c upgrades & Preventative Maintenance - A question or two.

I wouldn't take my word for it either, so no problem - I'm just experimenting anyway. I'm really interested in how it works out however. I don't have a 3400c, but the more we can pool what we know about replacing these IDE drives in the early Macs which used them, the better it is for everyone...

PowerBook 3400c upgrades & Preventative Maintenance - A question or two.

That SD adapter is the same as the one(s) I used in my Lombards. I didn't expect it to work because it's such an inexpensive solution, but for the Lombards at least, it did. The class 4 SD cards were the only ones I had laying around when I started messing with the adapters, and I rather...

PowerBook 3400c upgrades & Preventative Maintenance - A question or two.

I've been messing with SD cards in my G3 PBs, and was successful using SanDisk class 4 32Gb cards. Alternatively, generic 'Extreme Speed' (class 10) SDs have proven less cooperative. This in IDE-to-SD adapters. I have two Lombards happily running with this type of adapter and the SanDisk cards...

    Strange watches behavior on PB180c

I had something possibly similar with my 180 after I had removed a faulty RAM card, and replaced it with a good one. The system clock began skipping both date and time, almost every time a key was pressed. I disassembled the laptop again, removed the new card and refitted it. The problem didn't...

Interested but confused about 68k PowerBooks

I like the early PowerBooks, not least because I prefer trackballs to trackpads, and also they have pretty good keyboards, and a very distinct 'early Mac' user experience, but I've been playing with a few G3 PowerBooks of late, and the extra power gives them an edge in terms of the complexity of...

    PowerBook 3400c, what type password?

I have seen that very dialog on something recently, and remember thinking that since it related to SCSI disk mode, that it ought to be easy to bypass since that wasn't what I was trying to do. I can't remember what I did, but it can't have been much, because the dialog hasn't appeared since.

Announcing ZuluSCSI - A file-based SCSI device emulator

I had read that, but otherwise would not have known it. Nor would I have drawn an association anyway, though I concede that may just be a 'me' thing too.

Announcing ZuluSCSI - A file-based SCSI device emulator

BlueSCSI is certainly cheaper, though it doesn't seem to be better in any way other than being easier to set up and use. That said, performance-wise, in many systems you might not really be able to tell the difference. A small amount of research would tell a prospective customer which of the two...

Picked up a couple of pristine PowerBooks

That PDQ looks truly amazing! I thought mine was as good as I was likely to see after cleaning the dust off it, but that one looks like it was barely used! Great find!

Powerbook G3 PDQ correct power supply

I can confirm that a yo-yo adapter which came with a G3 Clamshell works perfectly for my PDQ, also with a Lombard. And a PowerBook 1400 adapter with my Lombard at work - so those are obviously interchangeable.

    PB180 10MB RAM module issue

I really don't want to be the person who always responds to PB180 problems with 'me too', but this also happened with mine. It sometimes booted, but usually not, and often stuck at a blank screen after the startup chime, with no other activity. Sometimes it gave the 'sad Mac' chimes, which seems...

Announcing ZuluSCSI - A file-based SCSI device emulator

The issue isn't with the fact some would have given it a different name. That's rather like suggesting that if this were a trademark infringement case, the problem would lie with those complaining about the alleged infringement, not the people responsible for it. That said, my personal view is...

Introducing (and interest check) AirTalk: Wireless plug-and-play LocalTalk dongles

I would love a couple of these, though my Classic and Classic II are both in pieces at present while pending recapping. A real genius of development!

    Been gone a long time....but i return.

I find it just a bit amusing when people talk about performance of old systems like the Classic (amongst many others) when these days we seem dissatisfied with our multi-GHz, multi-core, dedicated silicon. It isn't performance I'm interested in with these type of systems, it's the experience of...
