This has me thinking back pretty hard. But wasn't it possible to disable SSL (v1, v2) on Netscape 4.x as well as IE 4.x. iCab offers the same function too AFAIR.
I can check If you want to, but not before tomorrrow.
I feared that when I used the plastic lever to pull out the mainboard. It did not come out easily, but the lever held. It"s probably a good idea to not using it often after cleaning the system.
I have been loking for a long time to find a 12" 1.5 Ghz Powerbook to repair the one I bought new in 2005 and that is pretty much worn out. Now I got a working one in pretty good condition for only 50 EUR. Neat! I'm looking forward to a refurbished 12" Powerbook 1.5 GHz, the Mac I liked most of...
For anyone in Europe, there is a source in Germany too:
https://www.vesalia.de/d_68040.htm
They sell it as "tested up to 40 Mhz" although it says 25 on the chip. - I got a XC Revision E31F and it works well in a Performa 630. Without a heatsink it gets warm but not hot enough to burn your...
Check the voltages of the 5V and 12V rail. It can be done from the Floppy port and is described in the Classic Macintosh Repair Guide. The menioned Optoisolator can be the culprit, but so can the nearby PP1 potentioeter. In any case - checking the voltages while the machine is running, will give...
@Bolle
I've just found this thread and did not (yet) read it all. I just want make sure that you aware of this device: Onion Omega2
I've successfully connected to WIFI using a Linux Laptop as a PPP Bridge with the "slirp" package. I am also still experimenting with an ESP32 setup but thinking...
Don't worry, it is not too bad. I've replaced several back in the day when the machines were still in regular use and never had more than one or two screws left over ;-)
Just take your time and make pictures at every step and you'll do fine if the HD's time has come.
Seeing this, I rememberd that a pretty complete black PowerMac 5500/225 setup has been offered multiple times over the last few months on an Austrian classified ads site. Link can be found in the EU Finds Thread.
The last version of MacSSH can connect over the SSH2 protocol which is more or less mandatory today. But it does not support current strong cyphers like ed25519. While this is still way more secure than telnet, I could not connect to any of my Linux machines with it. As I said - Belt suspenders...
To answer @dan.dem's question. I've not been able to get the PC Card extensions working under MacOS 8 or 8.1 although I have tried on a 68k Performa 630 and not a PPC 6100. I had to switch back to System 7.5.5 for the PC Card functionality although 8.1 did not display any other issues and...
@cofford
It is true, Switches provide some degree if isolation and may prevent casual listeners. If there is anything out in your network actively sniffing passwords, then Switch isolation does not prevent anything. For example - saturating the Switches throughput might just let it fall back...
This is a valid setup for sure. Altough would not recommend using telnet even in an internal network! Usually there are many non-trusted devices on the network, that are able to see your unencrypted passwords. Think about Smartphones, TVs etc...
68040 Macs can connect to modern SSH servers...
Regarding the boot from Rom issue. Mine also would not do that after recapping and repair. Clearing the PRAM on boot (comand+option+p+r) made it work again!
I would suggest to disconnect the HD first, then reset the PRAM and then try to boot from ROM. Let us know what happens!
I also recently had problems with a Classic AB (See this thread)
Short version, it turned out that the PP1 potentiometer was oxidized and did no work anymore, so I still had low voltages even after I replaced most of the parts you also did. Voltage a bit too low gave me a wobbly screen. Even...
So its a 220 Ohm pot - thank you for the information. I'll order a similar looking one, and if need be, I can always extend the leads and solder it on "free-floating" or fixed with hot glue.
But what do yo mean by adjusting from the bottom? In my case I had to reach through and around the CRT...
@bibilit Nice one. That brings up memories of me doing a similar thing with a G3 iMac that was making an incredible loud high pitched noise. Found the source and glued it down with epoxy - that fixed the issue. I had completely forgot about that :)
Hi!
Following the recent completion of my Mac Classic renovation I've continued to Software. I am looking for a Gopher client that works on System 7.1 (with Thread Manager) on a 68000 machine. TurboGopher is an obvious choice but on the Classic it crashes with an Error 2 just after the...
